Mountain scenery and railway heritage beyond Adana
North-west of Adana, the urban landscape gives way to valleys, bridges and uplands around Karaisalı. Three sights particularly define this part of the Taurus Mountains: Varda Bridge, Kapıkaya Canyon and the Çakıt Valley, and the wooded Kızıldağ uplands.
It is a rewarding outing from Adana for visitors seeking mountain scenery and some relief from the city heat.
Karaisalı lies approximately 45–50 kilometres north-west of central Adana. Roads lead from the town towards Varda Bridge, Kapıkaya Canyon, Yerköprü, Kızıldağ and the railway climbing through the Taurus.
The town can therefore serve as a starting point for a full day outdoors.
Varda Köprüsü is the area's best-known landmark, also called the German Bridge or Koca Köprü, the Great Bridge.
Built between 1907 and 1912 as part of the railway project linking İstanbul and Baghdad through the Taurus Mountains, it is approximately 172 metres long and 99 metres high.
The bridge follows a curve rather than running straight across the valley. Its railway setting makes it a well-known location for photographing trains and mountain scenery. Train movements are subject to the operating timetable; a particular passing train is never guaranteed.
The most rewarding view is from designated viewpoints around the valley, where bridge, railway, surrounding Taurus peaks, wooded slopes and the drop below can be seen together.
Stay away from the track and areas closed to pedestrians. Do not go onto the railway bridge to take photographs.
Kapıkaya Kanyonu lies approximately 5 kilometres from central Karaisalı. The Çakıt Çayı flows through the gorge between rock walls reaching around 200 metres in places.
Visitor information describes a walking route approximately 7.25 kilometres long, with protective railings along more exposed sections. Check the current route and access before setting out.
Walking, photography, properly organised climbing activities and time in nature are the principal attractions. The canyon offers a striking contrast with Adana's streets and flat agricultural surroundings.
Kapıkaya is a natural gorge rather than a level urban park. Wear suitable shoes, carry water and avoid the middle of the day in summer.
Check the weather, particularly rainfall, as valley conditions can change quickly. You do not need to complete the entire route to enjoy the scenery: choose a section suited to your time, fitness and the conditions.
Yerköprü Mesire Alanı lies approximately 13 kilometres from Karaisalı. Trees, water and streams give this recreation area a particularly green character in spring.
It offers places to rest and picnic where permitted, making it a less demanding stop after the bridge or canyon.
In summer, many local residents head towards Kızıldağ Yaylası, approximately 27 kilometres from Karaisalı.
Wooded surroundings, cherry and apple trees, walnuts and walking opportunities characterise the uplands. Their cooler conditions compared with the Adana plain explain the area's longstanding role as a summer retreat.
Varda Bridge belongs to a much wider engineering landscape. Crossing the Taurus required railway builders to negotiate deep valleys, hard rock, tunnels and bridges along one of the route's most demanding stretches.
The railway consequently became part of Karaisalı and the Çakıt Valley's history. Today, the relationship between historic infrastructure and the mountain landscape remains clearly visible.
- Morning: Begin at Varda Bridge before the heat builds, allowing time for viewpoints and photographs.
- Late morning: Continue to Kapıkaya Canyon and walk a section suited to your fitness and schedule.
- Afternoon: Rest among the greenery at Yerköprü. Alternatively, choose Kızıldağ if the upland atmosphere is your main interest.
Choosing one afternoon option keeps the day varied without filling it with too many transfers.
- Transport: A car offers the most flexibility between sites.
- Canyon footwear: Wear trainers or walking shoes with a suitable grip.
- Summer: Start early.
- Varda Bridge: Use designated viewing places and keep clear of the railway.
- Valley walks: Review the forecast before setting off and follow current route restrictions.
A single outing can take you from city streets to a great railway bridge above a deep valley, a canyon cut by the Çakıt, green recreation areas and traditional mountain summer retreats.
Karaisalı is therefore an excellent introduction to Adana province's mountain landscape.
The next guide continues north and east towards Kozan, with Sis Castle, inland Cilician history and the surrounding archaeological sites.
