For a longer stay in Türkiye, compare prepaid and monthly-billed mobile plans alongside home broadband. The right choice depends on your length of stay, actual usage, coverage and contract terms. Paying monthly does not automatically mean committing for a fixed term.
1. Prepaid and monthly-billed mobile service
Prepaid (faturasız; TL yükleme):- Top up credit or buy a bundle for calls, data and messages.
- Often suitable for:
- Visitors and tourists.
- Residents who prefer not to make a long-term tariff commitment.
- Advantages:
- Usually no 12- or 24-month spending commitment. There is still a registered subscription and its terms; “prepaid” does not mean no contract at all.
- You can decide when to buy another bundle or top up.
- Things to check:
- The price per gigabyte may be higher or lower than a monthly plan, depending on the offer; compare the actual packages.
- When credit or a bundle runs out, some services may stop or use remaining credit at a different rate. Long inactivity can lead to restrictions and eventual cancellation under the operator’s rules.
Monthly billing (faturalı hat):- You use a plan during the billing period and pay the resulting bill. Offers may be uncommitted or include a discount in return for a fixed commitment (taahhüt), commonly advertised in 12-month periods; terms vary.
- Advantages:
- A suitable offer may provide better value for regular data and calls.
- A recurring allowance and optional automatic payment reduce the need for manual top-ups. Extra use, add-ons, taxes or changing terms can still affect the bill.
- Things to check:
- Ending a committed offer early can create a lawful repayment or cancellation charge, subject to regulatory limits; it is not an unlimited penalty chosen by the operator.
- Foreign subscribers should confirm the operator’s current identification, residence-status, deposit and payment requirements. A bank account or credit card is not a universal prerequisite for every monthly plan.
2. The main mobile operators
The three main mobile network operators are:- Turkcell.
- Türk Telekom.
- Vodafone Türkiye.
How to compare them:- Ask about coverage in your actual neighbourhood and building, rather than relying on a national ranking.
- Check current offers through:
- The operator’s official website.
- Its app.
- An authorised branch.
- Confirm:
- What happens when your data allowance ends: service suspension, an additional bundle or out-of-bundle charges.
- How to monitor remaining data, minutes and charges.
3. Home broadband: ADSL, VDSL and fibre
Connection types:- ADSL and VDSL use copper infrastructure. Available speed depends on line quality, distance and the service supported at the address.
- Fibre can offer higher speeds where the building and provider support it; availability must be checked for the exact address.
Read these contract details:- Any commitment period, often advertised over 12–24 months depending on the offer, and the price after it ends.
- Download and upload speeds, including any distinction between advertised and attainable performance.
- Data allowance and any usage restrictions, even where the service is described as unlimited.
- Installation and modem/router charges: free, financed, rented or returnable equipment are different arrangements.
Before signing:- Ask how an early termination charge would be calculated and whether any equipment balance or return obligation remains.
- If you do not speak Turkish comfortably, check the support languages actually available; English support is not guaranteed by every provider or channel.
4. Matching a plan to your use
Light or ordinary use:- A mobile allowance such as 10–20 GB a month can be a starting point for comparison, together with moderate-speed home broadband. Whether it is sufficient depends on video quality, time online and how much you use Wi-Fi; it is not a universal estimate.
Study, gaming or remote work:- Compare available fibre or suitable VDSL with a mobile backup allowance.
- Investigate:
- Latency for the games or services you use.
- Connection reliability and peak-time performance, as well as upload needs for video calls or large files.
A family sharing one home:- An appropriately sized home connection and smaller mobile allowances for use away from home may be economical. Compare simultaneous usage and each person’s needs before choosing.
5. Avoiding unexpected charges
Use the operator’s app to monitor consumption and charges, allowing for any reporting delay.
Set large app updates and downloads to Wi-Fi where appropriate.
Watch video usage: YouTube, TikTok and short-video feeds can consume substantial data.
Read the subscription and any separate commitment document, especially:- Duration and renewal terms.
- The early-termination calculation.
- Out-of-bundle prices and automatic add-ons.
Prepaid can suit occasional visits or an uncertain length of stay. A monthly mobile plan and home connection may offer value for a settled household, but only if the total price and commitment match your needs. Understand the terms before signing, and keep a copy.
