Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque: A Symbol of Successive Eras
Hagia Sophia is one of the world's best-known religious buildings,
having served as a Byzantine church, a mosque and a museum before becoming a mosque again.
- A huge dome, imposing columns, and Byzantine and Islamic decoration within the same building.
- In the heart of Sultanahmet, approximately opposite the Blue Mosque.

Basilica Cistern: The Underground City
The Basilica Cistern is a historic underground water reservoir.
Its illuminated columns, shallow water and carved heads, including Medusa, create a distinctive, mysterious atmosphere.
- Near Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, making it easy to include in the same outing.
- An appealing place for photographs and a different experience from the sights above ground.

Rumeli Fortress: Control of the Bosphorus
Rumeli Fortress was built on Sultan Mehmed II's orders before the conquest of Constantinople,
at approximately the narrowest point of the Bosphorus.

- It combines history with striking views of the strait.

⑪ Süleymaniye Mosque Complex: Sinan's Architecture
Süleymaniye Mosque stands on a hill overlooking the Golden Horn.
Designed by the celebrated architect Sinan, it is one of İstanbul's most admired mosque complexes.
- The complex includes the mosque, a broad courtyard, tombs and grounds with views across the city.
- Many visitors find its atmosphere quieter than Sultanahmet Square and particularly contemplative.
⑫ Planning One or Two Days of History in İstanbul
Day one — The historic city:- Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern.
- Then the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum or the Archaeology Museums, if time allows.
- Finish with a walk around Sultanahmet and, if you wish, the Grand Bazaar.
Day two — The Bosphorus and palaces:- Choose Topkapı Palace in the morning and allow at least half a day, or make Dolmabahçe the focus of a separate day.
- Do not automatically combine both palaces in one day: travel, queues and closing days can make the programme exhausting.
- Choose one complementary activity, such as Galata Tower or a Bosphorus cruise, according to your remaining time and energy.
Day three, optional:- Süleymaniye Mosque and the Archaeology Museums for a more detailed historical visit.
- A quieter walk through Beyoğlu, Karaköy and nearby neighbourhoods.
