A short walk from Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Square, beneath the streets, lies one of İstanbul's most atmospheric historic sights: the Basilica Cistern, or Yerebatan Sarnıcı.
This ancient water reservoir is now a visitor attraction, known for its illuminated columns and mysterious atmosphere, like a hidden palace beneath the city.
What is the Basilica Cistern, and why was it built?
A simple introduction:- It is a vast underground reservoir built in the Byzantine period to store water for the imperial palace and important buildings nearby.
Its original purpose:- It formed part of a complex system bringing water into the city from beyond its walls.
- A covered reservoir helped safeguard a stored water supply; being underground should not be taken as a guarantee against contamination or military attack.
Location:- It is very close to Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Square.
- The usual entrance takes visitors down steps from street level into the cistern.
What can you see inside the Basilica Cistern?
Rows of illuminated columns:- Hundreds of stone columns stand in parallel rows.
- Low lighting gives the space the atmosphere of an underground palace.
Walkways and water:- Follow the raised visitor walkways among the columns and above the water. The restored route uses modular metal platforms.
- In some places, the columns are beautifully reflected on the water's surface.
The famous Medusa heads:- Two column bases in a corner of the cistern incorporate carved heads of Medusa.
- One is upside down and the other lies on its side, adding to the sense of mystery and the legends associated with the site.
The atmosphere of a visit
Sound and surroundings:- Echoing footsteps, water and dim lighting can create the feeling of a historical or fantasy film set.
- Sound effects or quiet music may accompany some displays or events.
Photography:- The interior is relatively dark, so a steady hand or a camera that performs well in low light helps.
- Avoid directing flash towards other people, follow the current photography rules and keep narrow walkways clear.
How long do you need, and when should you visit?
Visit length:- Allow around 30–45 minutes for a typical visit.
- You may stay longer if you enjoy photography or reading about the structure.
When to visit:- It can fit into different parts of the day, within the current admission hours.
- The underground interior can be a cooler break from a hot summer day.
Tickets:- Do not assume a combined sightseeing ticket or museum pass includes the cistern: budget for separate admission unless your ticket explicitly covers it.
- Queues can form in busy seasons, so allow extra time rather than relying on a short wait.
Combining it with a day in Sultanahmet
An example sequence:- Visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the former Hippodrome area.
- Then descend into the Basilica Cistern for a different ending to a day of historic sights.
- Alternatively, start with the cistern in the morning before exploring the outdoor monuments.
Who might enjoy it?- Visitors who enjoy unusual places and an experience beyond conventional museum galleries.
- Families: many children and teenagers find the underground setting exciting.
In brief:
The Basilica Cistern offers history, engineering and a cinematic atmosphere in a striking underground space.
Alongside Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace, it adds another dimension to a day in Sultanahmet:
– above ground, mosques, palaces and squares;
– below ground, an ancient reservoir resembling a secret palace of shadow and light.
