The Anzer uplands in İkizdere district.
İkizdere lies in the mountainous interior of Rize province, bringing together valleys, forests, villages and uplands. Anzer, also known as Ballıköy, is associated with pastures, flowers and renowned local honey. The area shows how rural identity grows from people’s relationship with altitude, water and natural resources, creating a clear contrast with coastal towns.
İkizdere’s villages occupy mountainous terrain where streams form natural links between slopes and settlements. Forests, fields, houses and roads adapted to steep ground shape the local landscape. Higher up are Ovit and other yayla summer pastures and settlements, creating varied scenery, climate and land use within the district.
Anzer is distinguished by high meadows and slopes with flowers, houses and rural settlements. Pastures support grazing and summer life, their appearance changing with the seasons and weather. The transition from woodland to more open ground explains the contrast with lower villages and helps make sense of the summer settlements and their dependence on mountain resources.
Flowers, meadows and scenery in the Anzer area.
Anzer honey is renowned for its connection with the area’s flowering plants and has a registered geographical indication defining its local identity. It brings together the environment, rural work and inherited knowledge of beekeeping. A name on a jar alone does not prove authenticity. The honey’s cultural identity should also be distinguished from commercial or medical claims requiring independent evidence.
The villages reveal local building traditions and settlement patterns linked to valleys and pastures, with connections to communities beyond the mountains. Rural production, summer pastures and local produce together give the area its character. Anzer offers more than honey shopping, and İkizdere is more than the road leading there: both belong to a wider social and natural landscape.
Allow for the flowering season, changing weather and conditions on high roads. Do not enter apiaries or private pastures without permission, and avoid disturbing bees near their hives. When buying honey, look for origin and authentication information. A general visit can focus on exploring the villages and their local environment.
