The historic Ali Rıza Şişman house in Fındıklı, combining stone and timber.
Fındıklı and Pazar are coastal districts of Rize province, with valleys and tea-growing villages climbing the green slopes behind them. The landscape brings together maritime life, farming and historic houses, reflecting the cultural diversity of the eastern Black Sea. Smaller landmarks and rural architecture give the area an interest of its own along the route between cities.
The coast forms an urban and commercial frontage, while valleys lead inland to villages and farms. This connection explains how quickly the scene changes from sea and town to cultivated slopes and scattered homes. Seasons and weather affect beaches and watercourses, and the coast varies considerably in both appearance and use.
Villages in Fındıklı, including Çağlayan and Aslandere, contain examples of local houses and mansions. Stone, timber and architectural details show how builders responded to humidity and sloping ground. These buildings reveal the history of rural life, living arrangements and work. Their gardens and agricultural surroundings are part of that story: separating a house from its setting removes part of its value.
The tower of Kız Kalesi off the Pazar coast.
Kız Kalesi, or Maiden’s Castle, stands on a small rock close to the Pazar shore. Its position gives the landmark a distinctive presence between land and sea and reflects the role of coastal fortification and surveillance. It differs from Rize Castle and inland Zilkale: the province’s castles vary in size, layout and the extent of their surviving structures.
Tea fields cover slopes around towns and villages, showing the links between climate, agricultural work and hospitality. The area also reflects Laz heritage and varied local traditions in language, music and social life. Exploring farming, houses and coastal landmarks connects these aspects of identity and gives a broader understanding than a visit to any single modern facility or shop.
Respect private homes and farms and ask permission before entering or photographing residents. Being able to see the coastal castle does not mean it is always accessible. Check sea conditions and minor roads when exploring beyond the centre, and use practical information that helps you understand and enjoy the area.
