An archival view of the remains of old Besni.
Besni combines a modern town centre with the remains of an older settlement to its south, alongside a food tradition known for tava and grape products. It makes a useful addition to a trip through western Adıyaman. Plan separately for the centre and the ruins, which offer different experiences.
Eski Besni, also called Aşağışehir, is the old settlement. The decision to move the centre began in the 1930s because the site offered little room for expansion and lacked suitable vehicle access.
This explains why the remains now stand apart from everyday activity in the modern town. Search for the old settlement by name rather than navigating only to central Besni.
The old settlement is associated with a castle on a rocky height and remains of mosques, baths and bridges from different periods. Some buildings survive only in fragments.
Use the open paths and ask about the current castle approach rather than climbing by an improvised route. Check the condition of buildings following the earthquake and any restoration work before approaching damaged areas.
Another archival view of old Besni's remains.
Besni tava combines meat and vegetables in an oven-baked tray. Its flavour depends on the ingredients, seasoning and baking method. It offers a straightforward introduction to local cooking.
Ask whether the portion is individual or for sharing, which vegetables it contains and how long preparation takes. Ordering ahead can help if you want lunch after visiting the ruins.
Besni grapes and grape products are well-known purchases in the area. Raisins travel more easily than hot food; grape molasses is another option if securely packaged for the journey.
Compare cleanliness, packaging, weight and price, and ask about the grape variety and drying method. Products bearing the town's name can differ between shops, so try a small sample before buying a large quantity.
Give Besni a defined place in your western Adıyaman itinerary and check the route to each stop. Combining it with Gölbaşı is possible with enough allowance for driving and visits.
Bring water and comfortable shoes, and explore the ruins in daylight. Ask locally about the best access point to the old settlement, then finish with a meal in the centre rather than relying on services among the ruins.
