🌶️ Shopping through scent and colour
The Egyptian Bazaar, also called the Spice Bazaar, suits lovers of flavours and gifts to share after travelling. In Eminönü behind the New Mosque, its displays include spices, tea, nuts, dried fruit and Turkish delight. Smaller than the Grand Bazaar, it lends itself to a focused visit, with two wings to explore rather than dozens of winding lanes.

Dating from the seventeenth century, it forms part of the New Mosque complex. Arches and displays make an attractive scene, but a rewarding visit combines looking around with purchases you need, rather than large quantities bought for the appeal of a display.

🫖 What to choose
🌿 Spices: decide how you will use them before buying. For everyday cooking, choose a small amount of a familiar flavour; for something new, ask about a blend’s ingredients and use. Keep its name on the packaging so you can try it again at home.

🍬 Turkish delight: flavours and fillings vary. Ask to taste the type you intend to buy if a sample is available, and check ingredients, especially for a recipient allergic to nuts or milk.

🥜 Nuts and dried fruit: compare taste, piece size and storage. Ask whether nuts are roasted or salted, and choose packaging for your journey rather than judging only the display.

🍵 Tea and blends: ask whether you are buying tea leaves, herbs or instant drink powder. This avoids taking home something different from the drink you tried in cafés.

TeaProduct type and preparationOriginal packaging with a clear label

⚖️ Weight matters more than the size of a heap
🧮 For loose products, ask for the price per stated weight, such as 100 grams or a kilogram, then agree the quantity. Check that the calculation covers the product’s weight, and ask whether the box costs extra.

🧾 For several purchases, note products and quantities before paying and keep the receipt. If two shops charge different prices, compare the same type, ingredients and weight; a shared product name does not mean identical quality.

🎁 For gifts, choose varied small packs that are easy to distribute. Keep strong aromas apart from sweets, and check food-import requirements in your destination country before buying items needing refrigeration or special care.

🚋 Access and a visit around Eminönü
T1 serves Eminönü station, from which you can walk towards the New Mosque and bazaar. Add views of Galata Bridge and the waterfront to the shopping day, then take a break before carrying purchases to the hotel.

📸 Photograph the passage and decoration, then ask permission before close-ups of products or staff. Keep other visitors moving freely while choosing your angle.

🕒 A light visit plan
Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half for browsing, comparisons and purchases, plus a break nearby. Look around first, then return to two or three shops to compare. Check holiday opening hours before setting out, and buy food last to reduce heat exposure and carrying time.
