🌍 Turkish Clubs in Europe 2025–2026: Participants, Campaigns and Qualification Format

Who represented Türkiye in the Champions League? Why did Fenerbahçe appear in the Europa League after starting in Champions League qualifying? How did Samsunspor move into the Conference League? This guide answers those questions and reviews the five Turkish clubs’ campaigns in 2025–2026, distinguishing qualifying, the league phase and the knockout rounds.

📌 This is a reference to the completed 2025–2026 season. For 2026–2027, see:

🇹🇷 At a glance: who participated and how far did they go?

Five clubs began European campaigns: Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, Samsunspor and Başakşehir. Three reached the league phase, each in a different competition. Beşiktaş and Başakşehir were eliminated in Conference League qualifying.

ClubEntry pointEnd of European campaign
GalatasarayDirect entry to the Champions League league phaseRound of 16 against Liverpool; lost 1–4 on aggregate
FenerbahçeChampions League third qualifying roundEuropa League knockout phase play-offs against Nottingham Forest; lost 2–4 on aggregate
SamsunsporEuropa League qualifying play-offsConference League round of 16 against Rayo Vallecano; lost 2–3 on aggregate
BeşiktaşEuropa League second qualifying roundConference League qualifying play-offs against Lausanne-Sport; lost 1–2 on aggregate
BaşakşehirConference League second qualifying roundConference League qualifying play-offs against Universitatea Craiova; lost 2–5 on aggregate

🔎 Keep the stages distinct: Taking part in a competition’s qualifying rounds does not mean reaching its league phase. Fenerbahçe played in Champions League qualifying, while Galatasaray were Türkiye’s only representatives in that competition’s league phase.

Galatasaray entered the league phase directly, then overcame Juventus in the knockout phase play-offs, 7–5 on aggregate. They won 5–2 in Istanbul and lost the return 2–3 after extra time; their first-leg advantage was enough to take them through.

In the round of 16, they beat Liverpool 1–0 in Istanbul but lost 0–4 at Anfield, ending their campaign. These ties show why both legs must be considered together: winning one match does not guarantee progress, and losing one does not mean elimination if the aggregate score remains in your favour.

🟠 Fenerbahçe: why did they move from the Champions League to the Europa League?

Fenerbahçe started in the Champions League third qualifying round and beat Feyenoord 6–4 on aggregate, losing the away first leg 1–2 before winning the return 5–2.

In the qualifying play-offs, they drew 0–0 with Benfica in Türkiye and lost the return 0–1. They then moved into the Europa League league phase because their elimination came during Champions League qualifying, where the relevant pathway allowed that switch.

Their Europa League campaign continued to the knockout phase play-offs, where Nottingham Forest eliminated them 2–4 on aggregate. When looking up their season, distinguish their Champions League qualifying campaign from the Europa League run that followed.

🔴⚪ Samsunspor:
They began in the Europa League play-offs, losing 1–2 on aggregate to Panathinaikos, then entered the Conference League league phase. They reached the round of 16 before Rayo Vallecano ended their campaign with a 3–2 aggregate victory.

🦅 Beşiktaş:
They lost 2–6 on aggregate to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League second qualifying round and moved into the Conference League third qualifying round. They reached the play-offs, but Lausanne-Sport eliminated them 2–1 on aggregate, before the league phase.

🟠 Başakşehir:
They entered the Conference League second qualifying round and overcame Cherno More, then Viking. Their campaign ended in the play-offs against Universitatea Craiova, with a 2–5 aggregate defeat.

🧭 How did the competitions work that season?

Since 2024–2025, a league phase has replaced the group stage in all three competitions. Each competition has one shared table, but every club faces only a set number of opponents; it does not play all 35 other teams.

CompetitionLeague-phase clubsMatches per team
Champions League36Eight against eight different opponents: four at home, four away
Europa League36Eight against eight different opponents: four at home, four away
Conference League36Six against six different opponents: three at home, three away

🥇 Places 1–8: Direct qualification for the round of 16.
⚔️ Places 9–24: Knockout phase play-offs for the eight remaining round-of-16 places.
🚪 Places 25–36: Elimination from Europe, with no move into another competition.

📌 There are two different play-off stages: Qualifying play-offs come before the league phase and decide entry to the main competition. Knockout phase play-offs come afterwards and decide who reaches the round of 16.

❓ Supporters’ questions

Did two Turkish teams participate in the 2025–2026 Champions League?
Galatasaray played in the league phase. Fenerbahçe played in qualifying and were eliminated before reaching it. Specifying the stage makes the answer accurate.

Do teams eliminated from the Champions League always move into the Europa League?
No. A switch can happen during qualifying, depending on the round and pathway, as it did for Fenerbahçe. Elimination from the league phase or knockout rounds does not provide entry to another competition.

Why did all five Turkish clubs not reach a league phase?
Some entry places begin in qualifying. Being among the participating clubs does not remove the need to get through those rounds; Beşiktaş and Başakşehir illustrate this in 2025–2026.

Does this guide’s table describe 2026–2027?
No: it describes 2025–2026. Guides to the new season appear in the links below. Each season needs to be considered separately.

✨ Why does European football matter to supporters?

European matches test clubs against different opponents and create memories that outlast the season. Galatasaray’s achievements in 2000 remain a powerful example: they beat Arsenal on penalties to win the UEFA Cup, then defeated Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

To assess 2025–2026, consider where each club started, the competition in which it continued, and the last round it reached. That approach explains the complete journey, instead of reducing it to a single match or confusing qualifying participation with reaching the league phase.
