The main idea
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visits to Saudi Arabia and then Egypt in February 2026 sent a clear political signal: Türkiye was seeking to consolidate a course of easing tensions and building partnerships with major regional powers, rather than sustaining costly confrontations.
Why did the visits matter?
1) A shift in regional relations
- The message was that disagreements need not prevent cooperation.- The visits opened opportunities for closer coordination on sensitive matters, including regional security, the economy, energy and transport.
2) Economic interests behind the diplomacy
- Closer relations with Riyadh and Cairo can create opportunities for investment, trade, tourism and joint projects; the benefits depend on what is implemented.- The underlying economic argument was that greater political stability could help ease pressures on Türkiye’s domestic economy.
3) Interconnected foreign policy issues
- The visits took place amid Turkish diplomatic efforts to help reduce tensions between the United States and Iran. Türkiye was seeking a role as a mediator or facilitator, while also pursuing its own interests.
The broader message
These visits involved more than diplomatic ceremony. They formed part of Türkiye’s approach in early 2026: expanding regional relationships to reduce risks and increase opportunities.
