Muğla 2026: Coastal Towns, Forests and a Maritime Economy

Muğla lies in southwestern Türkiye and includes well-known destinations such as Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Datça. Its inland administrative centres, coastal resorts and farming villages have quite different characters. Good planning therefore starts with choosing the part of the province where you want to stay.

In 2026, distances between destinations, seasonal services and summer pressure on roads and the natural environment remain important considerations for both holidays and longer stays.

Population and administrative districts

Muğla had a registered population of 1,099,547 at the end of 2025, the annual reference figure used when discussing its population during 2026. The province has 13 districts, with its administrative centre inland in Menteşe.

Residents are spread across numerous towns and rural areas, while the number of people actually on the coast rises during the holiday season. Registered population figures should therefore be distinguished from the temporary population in tourist destinations.

What drives Muğla's economy?

  • Tourism and services: Hotels, restaurants, transport, excursions, and cultural and coastal activities.
  • The maritime economy: Marinas, boat hire and yacht services, together with fish and seafood, which are prominent in the province's exports.
  • Agriculture and rural life: Farming linked to villages and local markets complements tourism across much of the province.
  • Everyday services: Public administration, education, healthcare and retail are important when assessing a place to live throughout the year.

Employment opportunities and services vary between districts. Seasonal tourism work calls for different planning from a job or business operating all year.

Choosing a base

Consider these options according to the purpose of your trip:

  • Bodrum: For the peninsula, harbours, restaurants and history. Choose a neighbourhood that suits your budget and transport needs.
  • Marmaris and İçmeler: For beaches, waterfront walks, boat trips and tourist services.
  • Fethiye: For an itinerary including Ölüdeniz, natural areas and nearby archaeological sites. Allow for the distance to each destination.
  • Dalaman and Ortaca: For trips centred on the airport, Dalyan or Sarıgerme. Your daily destinations will help determine the most convenient base.
  • Akyaka or Datça: For a stay focused on a particular stretch of coast, its natural surroundings and nearby villages.
  • Menteşe: For stays connected with the provincial administrative centre, study or services in Muğla city.

Arriving and travelling between districts

The province has two main air gateways: Milas–Bodrum Airport and Dalaman Airport. Compare flights alongside your hotel's location, as your airport choice affects the time spent on the road after landing.

If your itinerary covers distant parts of the province, splitting your stay between two areas may be more practical than returning to the same hotel each day. When relying on buses and dolmuş minibuses, check departure points, the last service and connections to more remote beaches.

Planning for the 2026 season

Muğla's 2026 forest fire measures restrict entry to designated forest areas from 1 June to 31 October. Check whether your intended route is affected, follow local signs and use areas where access is permitted.

Before booking a long stay, check services outside the summer season, insulation, heating, internet access, parking and transport. For a short holiday, staying close to your main activities leaves more time for exploring and less time driving.
