Scholarships in Türkiye take several forms: government awards, university scholarships, tuition discounts and partial assistance. A carefully prepared application and a clear understanding of the criteria can strengthen your case, but competitive selection is never guaranteed.
1. The main types of funding
- Government scholarships, such as Türkiye Scholarships: the full-time scheme combines university placement with tuition, accommodation, health insurance and a monthly stipend. Other schemes have different coverage. Competition is strong, and meeting the minimum requirements does not secure an award.
- Foundation university scholarships and discounts: these may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or all tuition, where offered. Universities set their own academic, examination and interview criteria. Any additional offer must be confirmed officially in writing.
- Departmental or academic merit awards: some universities offer these to enrolled students after a semester or year, based on their GPA and cohort performance.
- Partial assistance: help with accommodation, fees or other expenses can reduce costs without amounting to a fully funded scholarship.
2. What selection committees look for
Requirements vary, but your school or university results, relevant achievements, motivation and suitability for the programme all matter. Postgraduate applications may also require academic references and a research proposal. Check the language and test requirements for your chosen course.
Explain why you want this subject and why the particular university or Türkiye fits your plans. A generic statement that could be sent to any country rarely demonstrates that fit.
3. Build a coherent application
Your documents should tell a consistent story:
- Who are you, and what have you studied?
- Why is this subject the next logical step?
- What do you hope to achieve during the degree?
- What will you do after graduation?
- How could you contribute to the university or wider community?
4. Six elements of a useful motivation statement
- A direct opening that explains your purpose.
- A realistic reason for choosing the subject.
- Specific reasons for choosing the university or Türkiye.
- A project, research interest or activity you would like to pursue.
- A clear plan for using the qualification after graduation.
- A concise closing that expresses interest and appreciation.
5. Mistakes that can weaken or invalidate an application
- Copying an online statement instead of writing about your own experience.
- Exaggerating achievements or submitting evidence you cannot substantiate.
- Uploading disorganised files or unreadable scans.
- Choosing a subject unrelated to your previous studies without a convincing explanation.
- Missing the deadline or a required document.
6. A practical application strategy
Where eligible, consider a government award, three to five suitable foundation universities and a realistic alternative such as a less expensive city or a closely related programme. Compare the actual funding and costs of each option.
Prepare early, keep an organised master file and follow each portal's individual upload requirements. Supply documents and translations in the languages requested by the provider; do not assume Arabic and English versions are always sufficient. You may apply for several awards, but check restrictions on holding more than one or combining funding before accepting them.
7. Applying for a foundation university discount
A strong academic record, accepted language results and a well-prepared application may help where the published scheme recognises them. Early application can give you time to resolve missing documents, although it does not automatically earn a larger discount.
Ask the university directly what is covered, how many years the award lasts, whether preparatory study is included, what GPA you must maintain and whether fees can rise. A discussion about a fee offer should be professional, documented and consistent with the university's rules.
8. Frequently asked questions
Do I need an exceptionally high GPA?
Strong grades help, and a scheme's minimum is mandatory. The full application may also be assessed, but other strengths do not automatically override eligibility thresholds.
Is accommodation always included?
No. A full tuition waiver can leave all living expenses to you. Check the precise award terms.
Should I apply for more than one scholarship?
Usually it is sensible to consider several suitable options, subject to each scheme's rules and any restrictions on overlapping awards.
Your next step
List your subject, grades, preferred universities and available budget, then compare the published criteria. Keep a realistic backup plan alongside your strongest applications.
