Cabin Baggage on Flights in Türkiye: Liquids, Batteries, Medicines and Prohibited Items

Your bag can meet the size allowance yet contain an item refused at security, or it may be checked at the gate. Distinguish airport security rules, dangerous-goods requirements and the operating airline’s size and weight allowance.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Check the bag and each flight

Check the number, size and weight of pieces allowed in your booking with the operating carrier for every flight. Fare, class and airline can change the allowance. For connections, check every flight and security checkpoint, not just your outward journey.

Keep documents, essential medication and valuables accessible. If your cabin bag must be checked at the gate, remove spare batteries, power banks and anything that must remain with you, following crew instructions.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Liquids and creams

Turkish civil aviation guidance describes liquids and similar substances in containers of no more than 100 ml each, inside one transparent resealable bag per passenger of no more than one litre, presented for screening. Cream, paste, gel, honey and similar products count.

The container’s stated capacity matters, not how much remains: a half-empty 200 ml bottle is not a 100 ml container. Follow checkpoint instructions and check transfer-airport rules as well.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Medicines and infant food

The authority describes exceptions for necessary medicines and infant food or milk sufficient for the journey, subject to screening and verification of need. Keep medicine in original packaging, have a prescription or evidence of need ready if requested, and tell security staff.

For necessary liquid medicine or medical equipment, ask the airline and airport in advance about screening, documents and destination requirements. A cabin exception does not settle import or entry rules for medicines.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Batteries and power banks

Check the battery label and the carrier’s current limits and storage rules before travel. Spare lithium batteries and power banks need special handling: carry them in the cabin under carrier conditions and protect terminals from contact. Do not leave a power bank in a bag checked into the hold.

A Turkish Airlines example: its page permits up to two power banks per person, each up to 100 Wh, in the cabin with short-circuit protection. It requires storage under the seat in front or in the seat pocket, not in overhead bins, and prohibits charging them or using them to charge devices during flight. Recheck the carrier’s current rules; this example is not universal.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Devices and prohibited items

Ask about devices with installed batteries and medical equipment before packing, because their requirements differ from a separate power bank. Protect devices from damage and disclose a damaged battery or uncertain type to the carrier instead of concealing it.

Sharp objects and dangerous goods are not automatically allowed in the cabin or hold. Check the authority and carrier lists for the specific item; some are prohibited in both. Do not carry unidentified or leaking containers.

⁦6️⃣⁩ At security and after shopping

Keep the liquids bag and devices accessible for removal if requested and follow security staff instructions. For duty-free liquids, keep the security packaging and receipt sealed and check transfer-airport rules before relying on their acceptance at a later checkpoint.

If an item is refused, ask staff about available options before passing the checkpoint or about arrangements permitted by the airport and carrier. Do not rely on an informal exception or try to bypass screening.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Packing example

A traveller carries a 100 ml perfume container, necessary liquid medicine and a power bank. They place the perfume in the liquids bag, prepare the original medicine and evidence of need for screening, check the bank’s capacity and carrier conditions, and carry it in the cabin. They also check size, weight and transfer rules before departure.

⁦8️⃣⁩ Common questions

Can a container larger than 100 ml pass if nearly empty?
Not under the general liquid guidance: the container’s capacity is the criterion, subject to approved exceptions.

Is a power bank treated like a phone with an installed battery?
No. Spare batteries and power banks have different conditions from devices; check your carrier’s rules.

Does permission to carry medicine in the cabin mean every country permits entry with it?
No. Check destination and transit import rules and required documents separately.
