Plan your transport and return journey, even without internet access
Make getting to your hotel your first priority, then begin exploring with an easy outing. After a flight, you have luggage to manage, less energy and an unfamiliar address. A little preparation before travelling saves you from searching for the airport code in the arrivals hall, checking your balance at the ticket gate or working out how to get back that evening. You can use this approach to organise your arrival in cities across Türkiye; the route examples are from Istanbul. Each city has its own transport cards, operators and network to check.

Save a short travel note on your device
Prepare a note or save images that you can open without a connection, including:- The airport name and code, your arrival date and local arrival time, and your flight number.
- The hotel's name in Turkish, its full address and telephone number, a photograph of the entrance and a link to its map location.
- A nearby station or drop-off point confirmed by the hotel, and the route from there to reception.
- The steps of your main route, transfer stations and the direction of each train or bus.
- An alternative you can use if you are delayed, a connection is interrupted or carrying your luggage makes the route unsuitable.
- Your companions' names and contact numbers, and a meeting point if you become separated.
Offline maps: what works and what does not?
In Google Maps, you can download an area from the Offline maps menu. Choose an area that includes your hotel, airport and main stations, wait for the download to finish and update it when necessary. Menu names may vary by device and language. Check that all the places you need fall within the saved area; downloading a small area around the hotel will not cover a long route from the airport.Save an image of the local map showing the street name and entrance, along with images of the transport steps you checked while online. Test the files before travelling: briefly disconnect, check that you can open the address, images and note, then reconnect. If anything appears blank or asks you to sign in, save a copy directly on your device. This test matters more than simply seeing a download icon.
Your phone and connection before leaving the airport
Charge your phone and keep a power bank and cable within easy reach. If you buy a SIM card or activate a new service, test the data and calls covered by your chosen plan, and check its settings with the provider before leaving. A network symbol does not necessarily mean your map or booking app is working.Share the address with a companion and carry a small paper copy if needed. If you want offline translation, download the available languages in the translation app on your device and test a short sentence; some features or languages need a connection. Save important phrases beforehand so that communicating with a member of staff does not depend on downloading a new app.
Your arrival route: the airport code changes the whole plan
| Your arrival | An option to compare | What should you check? |
|---|---|---|
| IST, with a hotel near Taksim/Şişli | M11 to Gayrettepe, then M2, or a suitable Havaist service | Direction, lifts, the stop to get off at and the route to the hotel |
| IST, with a hotel in the historic area | A suitable bus, a rail route with several transfers or a car | Luggage, the drop-off point and whether you can manage every stage |
| SAW, with a hotel in Kadıköy | M4 towards Kadıköy or a suitable bus | The exit, distance to the hotel and the time of day |
| SAW, with a hotel on the European side | M4, then Marmaray and an onward connection, or HAVABÜS/a car | The crossing to the European side, transfers and the route to the hotel entrance |
| An airport in another city | A service run by the airport/city operator or another suitable transfer | The timetable, stop and transport card for that city |
Buying and topping up a transport card
Istanbul has different products, including the rechargeable Istanbulkart, tickets valid for a limited number of gate entries and the İstanbul City Card, which has different features. Read the product name and conditions before paying; cards bearing Istanbul's name are not all the same product. The purchase price of the physical card is separate from the credit you need for journeys.Remember that your first journey may involve passing through more than one ticket gate, and some services may charge different fares from the usual metro fare. Do not assume that every product offers transfer discounts or allows the same card to be used by more than one passenger. Visitors should also check whether they qualify for student concessions. Work out what each family member needs, and ask the operator you will use about its rules for children.
Look for an authorised machine or a clearly identified sales point. On the screen, Satın Al means buy and Yükleme means top up. Check your balance or the ticket issued before leaving the machine. Keep the receipt if needed. Do not add a large amount simply because you are unsure of the budget; start with enough for your day's plan, then check your balance.
Get to the hotel before starting your sightseeing
After getting off, compare the street name and entrance with your saved photograph. If the route is unclear, stop somewhere easy to identify and ask for help or call the hotel, instead of dragging your luggage in an uncertain direction. If the route is uphill or crowded and unsuitable for your family, consider a short car journey from a point the driver can reach. At reception, ask about three things: the best station entrance to use, the departure point for your return to the airport and a nearby walking route for your first outing. If you arrive early, check the room access and luggage arrangements for your booking; do not assume that a morning arrival always means immediate access to the room. Take time to rest before adding a long journey to the other side of the city.
Your first outing: choose one route that is easy to remember
If your hotel is near T1 in the historic area, a walk to Eminönü or Gülhane can be an easier start than combining a shopping centre, Taksim and Kadıköy on arrival day. From a hotel in Taksim, you could begin with a manageable stretch of İstiklal Avenue, making sure you know how to return to your hotel entrance. If you are staying in Kadıköy, choose something near the waterfront or within a distance you have checked. Before leaving, decide on your final stop and when to begin the return journey, then save an image of the route back. Make any extra visit optional, depending on how tired you feel, rather than a commitment you have to complete. What you learn on your first trip about payment, ticket gates and directions will help you more the next day than the number of places you try to cover.
A route to save: Sultanahmet to Eminönü and back
Outward journey: From Sultanahmet station, take T1 towards Kabataş and get off at Eminönü. Save your hotel's name and your starting station too, then identify your waterfront or market destination on the map. Do not simply follow everyone else; they may be heading for different exits and piers.Return journey: From Eminönü, take T1 towards Bağcılar, get off at Sultanahmet and follow your saved route to the hotel. Write out the return steps separately; “go back from the same place” does not tell you the direction. If the hotel is closer to Gülhane or Sirkeci, change the station you get off at to suit its address.
A route to save: Taksim to Sultanahmet
Outward journey: Take F1 from Taksim to Kabataş, then T1 towards Bağcılar to Sultanahmet. Save the interchange station names and each line number, and check the lifts if you have a pushchair or reduced mobility. Allow time to walk between services as well as for the train journey.Return journey: Take T1 towards Kabataş, then F1 to Taksim, followed by the appropriate exit and route to your hotel. Check the T1 and F1 services before extending your day; a report about “night metro” services does not mean these two lines run all night. If the hotel is some distance from the square, save the final stage separately rather than writing only “Taksim”.
A tram on the streets of Istanbul. Check your boarding stop and return direction before starting your outing.
A route to save: the European side to Kadıköy
If you choose a ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy, save the pier name, destination and operator, along with an image of the timetable you checked for that day. Go to the specified pier and read the departure board before passing through the gate. Do not buy a sightseeing cruise instead of a local transport journey simply because there is a boat on the waterfront.Return journey: Check return services from Kadıköy to Eminönü or Karaköy, and choose the arrival pier that suits your connection to the hotel. If you arrive at Karaköy, plan the route to the T1 stop there; reaching the European waterfront does not mean you have reached Eminönü pier. Have an alternative in case ferry services stop, and check that it is running, along with the walking stages and transfers, before relying on it.
Turkish signs you will need
| Word | Meaning | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Giriş / Çıkış | Entrance / Exit | Choose the right way to your hotel or destination |
| Aktarma | Transfer | Find your next line before choosing an exit |
| Peron | Platform | Match your destination to the correct boarding side |
| Asansör | Lift | Choose a suitable route for a pushchair or your mobility needs |
| Durak / İskele | Stop / Ferry pier | Distinguish the bus stop from the ferry pier and find your departure point |
| Nereden / Nereye | From where / To where | Search the timetable in the correct direction |
| Sefer Saatleri | Departure times | Check the operator's timetable rather than an undated image |
If you lose internet access while travelling
- Stop somewhere safe and easy to identify, and open your saved note and images.
- Read the name of your current station and compare it with your saved steps.
- Ask a member of the operator's staff using the written destination and line name, rather than only the name of a large district.
- Do not change to another mode of transport until you know where to get off and how to continue from there.
- If you need a car, show the hotel and its entrance, and confirm how the fare will be calculated and paid.
- Keep the family together or use an agreed meeting point; do not send everyone in different directions to look for an internet connection.
Families and older travellers: an easier first day
Choose a route with no more walking or luggage carrying than you can manage after the flight. Check lifts before travelling, then ask a member of staff when you arrive; a lift listed in a station description is not proof that it is working now. With a pushchair, use the lift on the Metro İstanbul network; do not use an escalator as an alternative if the lift is unavailable.Keep your child's essentials in a hand luggage bag, and share payment and luggage duties between companions if you have them. For a booked car, confirm the number of passengers and bags, and any child seat or wheelchair requirements. Descriptions such as “family” or “large” are not enough without the details. An early break makes the rest of the day easier than trying to finish the itinerary when everyone is tired.
Before the day ends: five minutes for tomorrow
Charge your devices, check your card balance and save the next day's route and return journey. Open the operator's website to check for closures or changes to lines and entrances, and choose one main visit and somewhere to rest. If you will be leaving the city soon, check your airport transfer now: the boarding point, direction and how early you need to be there.Use the official source for transport services, a map to understand the area and walking routes, and an app to request a car when needed. Each tool answers a different question; a map estimate alone does not confirm the last train time, the availability of a vehicle or whether a lift is working. After your first trip, adjust the itinerary to reflect your actual walking pace and how easily you manage transfers.
A note template to fill in before going out
Write: “My hotel: name, branch and address. I board at: station and entrance. Outward line: number and direction. I get off at: station and exit. Transfer: location and next line, if any. Return: starting station, the direction of each line and the station for my hotel. Alternative: a suitable car pick-up point or another connection I have checked.” Then add your chosen time to begin the return journey, taking account of service times and the group's energy.Keep the note short enough to read without a lengthy search, with the detailed images after it. If your day includes a ferry, record the outward and return piers rather than only the district name. If you change the day's destination, update the saved plan before leaving somewhere with a connection; yesterday's note may describe a valid line that does not take you to today's destination.
Frequently asked questions
Is downloading a map enough to use transport offline? No. Save the transport steps and images of timetables; live directions and public transport information do not automatically become available offline.
Does Istanbulkart work in the same way in every city in Türkiye?
Do not treat it as a national card; check the city's operator and the payment method required.
Should I buy the largest package or add a lot of credit at the start?
Compare the product with your travel plans, its conditions and the number of journeys. The price of the card is separate from the credit loaded onto it.
Do I need to visit lots of places on arrival day?
Choose what suits the time you go out, your energy and your luggage. A straightforward journey to the hotel and an easy outing are a practical start.
What are the most important details for the return journey?
The line name, direction, station to get off at, any transfer, and the exit and route to the hotel entrance.
How do I know my saved files are ready to use offline?
Test opening the address, images and note with your connection switched off before travelling.
