🎓 ALES, GRE and GMAT: Reading Postgraduate Requirements Carefully
Before booking a test, establish the required version, score type, threshold and delivery method for your applicant category and intended programme.

Several examination names appear in postgraduate announcements. It is easy to assume choosing one is a personal preference, or that any strong score opens every programme. A test's value in your application begins with whether the programme accepts it in the required form. A high score in an unaccepted test or an irrelevant section may not meet the requirement you need.

This guide explains how to read requirements and make a practical test decision. It does not supply a single national admission threshold or convert scores between tests on its own. Separate admission tests from language evidence, check your applicant category, establish result and reporting dates, then prepare for a defined need. These steps reduce the risk of spending time and money on a score that does not fit your application.

Completing paperwork for study

1️⃣ What role does each score play?

ALES is a central Turkish examination associated with postgraduate study and other academic uses. Programmes specify particular ALES score types. GRE and GMAT are international examinations that programmes may accept as alternatives or requirements under their own rules. A university accepting a test name does not imply acceptance of every version or section, or the same decision at a neighbouring university.

Ask what part of your application the score will satisfy. Is it an eligibility condition, a selection component or an approved alternative to another test? Keep it separate from proof of the teaching language. English-language questions in an international test do not automatically make its result accepted language evidence. When an announcement lists examination and language requirements separately, each must be met in its own right.

2️⃣ Establish your applicant category

Read the section for international applicants rather than starting with a general table and assuming all of it applies. The framework leaves international admission procedures to universities, so examination requirements, alternatives and assessment may differ. Some rules may also differ for Turkish citizens who completed their entire bachelor's abroad. Use the university's definition rather than an informal student label.

If your circumstances need interpretation, such as dual citizenship or study across institutions, briefly describe the issue to the institute without unnecessary personal documents. Ask which announcement and category apply. Do not assume exemption from citizenship alone or a requirement from a friend's experience. Your current programme cycle and the category determined by the responsible office govern the application.

3️⃣ Extract the requirement into seven fields

Record the test name, type or version, required section or score type, minimum score, validity period, reference date for validity and reporting method. These fields resolve much of the ambiguity. A programme might require an international test's quantitative section, while another asks for the equal-weight ALES score. A larger-looking total measuring something else is not a substitute.

Add a notes field for any exemption or conditions specific to non-thesis master's study or doctoral entry after a bachelor's. A minimum score determines whether an application can be considered; it does not guarantee admission. Competition, assessment, an interview and a research profile may also matter. If selection weights are published, record the institution's figures rather than creating a formula from a previous year or unofficial table.

4️⃣ A requirements reading table

Required scoreThe score type specified in the announcementThe section or scale named by the university
ValidityCheck the period and reference dateCheck report validity and the university's condition
DeliveryResult document under application instructionsUpload or official reporting as instructed
Language evidenceA separate requirement to checkDo not assume the examination covers it
Use this table to read an announcement, rather than as a national requirements list. Programmes differ within one university, and conditions may change between master's and doctoral study or between bachelor's-entry and master's-entry routes. One page title may cover several programmes. Read the paragraph for yours instead of choosing the closest threshold to the score you already hold.

5️⃣ Version, scale and conversion

An examination's structure, version or score scale may change, with a university addressing the change in its announcement. Do not compare an old-version number with a newer one solely by numerical size. GMAT requirements, for example, may explicitly distinguish versions. If the announcement does not identify the version you took, seek confirmation before paying to send a report.

Do not create your own ALES, GRE or GMAT conversion from training websites or circulated tables. Acceptance as an alternative does not make the numbers equivalent. A university may publish separate thresholds or adopt a particular table or official decision. Ask which rule applies and keep the clarification. Without an explicit conversion, assess each result against its own requirement.

6️⃣ Validity and timing are separate questions

The validity period alone does not establish acceptance. Find out whether the programme requires the result to remain valid at application, closing or enrolment. A score valid when uploaded may need to remain valid later. Record the exam date, result publication date and university's reference date together. Do not use an approximate month when validity is close to expiring.

Also establish when the official result will be available and when a report will reach the university. Allow for report processing and correcting possible errors, rather than merely taking the test before the last application day. If results will arrive late, ask whether a conditional application is permitted and what evidence it needs. Do not assume permission. Booking dates and fees belong to the current examination cycle because they are not fixed information.

7️⃣ Uploading is not always official reporting

An application system may request an uploaded result file and later require an original or a report sent by the test provider. Check each stage. Some international programmes use institution or department codes for score reporting. Use the receiving programme's published code rather than copying one from another university or an old page.

Keep the result document as issued, evidence of a reporting request where required, and confirmation of university receipt. Typing a score in the form does not replace a required document. Match the name and result details with your application, and ask about correcting discrepancies. Do not edit a certificate yourself or upload a crop hiding verification information. When correcting an input field, check its effect on the saved application.

Organising documents and an online application

8️⃣ Choosing when alternatives are available

First make a realistic programme shortlist, then list each programme's accepted alternatives. Where possible, choose a test that serves a useful proportion of your goals, allowing for different thresholds, sections and versions. If a priority programme accepts only one test, that may outweigh another examination's relative ease. Do not add dozens of unsuitable programmes simply to justify an existing score.

Compare question language, present skills, preparation time, centre availability, reporting and the full cost. Include booking, preparation, travel, score reports and possible retakes without assuming uniform prices. Try official introductory material to identify your training gap, then decide from requirements and resources. A preparation-course advertisement or promised score is not an assessment of what you need.

9️⃣ Preparation you can measure

Begin with a diagnostic under conditions close to the test, then classify errors: misunderstanding, a skill gap, speed or time management. A label such as weak quantitative ability is less useful than identifying misread relationships or time lost on a particular question. Keep a short error log recording corrections and how to avoid repetition, rather than accumulating questions without review.

Divide time among skill development, targeted practice, simulations and review. The goal is observable improvement in accuracy and timing, rather than a large number of hours to claim. Practise reading where the examination language takes extra effort, while remembering the programme's separate language requirement. Before test day, read identity, centre and permitted-material instructions, along with accessibility procedures where needed.

1️⃣0️⃣ A hypothetical test decision

Mariam applies to three research master's programmes. One accepts a particular ALES score type, another a specified GRE section, and the third offers two alternatives. She creates a record for each and identifies her international applicant category. She asks the first programme whether a different rule applies to international applicants, waiting for a programme-specific answer instead of assuming either obligation or exemption from a general announcement.

After resolving the gaps, she chooses the examination that serves her priority programmes and available time. She plans result availability and reporting, keeping the language certificate as a separate item. She does not use a threshold from another student's previous-year experience or compare all results on one scale. If her shortlist changes to doctoral entry after a bachelor's, she will reread requirements because degree level and entry route may alter them.

1️⃣1️⃣ Resolving an unclear condition

Ask something the institute can answer specifically: “I am applying to this programme in this category, with a result from this version and section. Does it meet the admission-test requirement, and what validity reference date and reporting method apply?” Avoid a general question about the best test in Türkiye. If two tables conflict, identify their titles and applicant categories without overwhelming the message.

Keep the institute's reply with the date of your question and cycle announcement. Record whether it resolves all or only part of the ambiguity. A reply accepting the test does not necessarily confirm your score or every application condition. Ask only about the outstanding point after a brief response. If no confirmation arrives before the deadline, follow the published condition or reconsider the plan rather than assuming an unwritten exception.

1️⃣2️⃣ Avoidable mistakes

Common mistakes include preparing before selecting programmes, using another programme's threshold, confusing language and admission tests, and treating a minimum as a guaranteed competitive outcome. Applicants may also overlook that a result accepted for a non-thesis master's does not automatically serve doctoral entry, or that an uploaded report may need separate official transmission. A clear requirements sheet helps prevent each problem.

Do not enter an expected future score as an actual result or conceal an expired result's status when asked. If the form permits an upcoming test, use the designated field under its instructions. Accurate information avoids contradictions at enrolment. On retaking, check how the university handles multiple results rather than assuming it combines the best sections from different sittings.

1️⃣3️⃣ Track every application separately

After choosing the examination, keep a programme record showing the requirement, available result, delivery action and status. Distinguish a file uploaded, a report officially sent and receipt confirmed. Payment of a reporting fee is not completion: payment and receipt are separate events. When a new result arrives, check which application needs updating and whether its system permits it.

Keep the cycle name, date you read the announcement and the answer applicable to your case. If a condition changes during preparation, compare versions and ask about its effect rather than ignoring it. Your record does not need much personal information, but it does need a clear next action and relevant deadline so programme procedures do not become mixed up.

Preparing an application for study

1️⃣5️⃣ Before booking and applying

  • I have identified the programme, route and applicant category.
  • I have confirmed the accepted test, version and required section.
  • I have read the minimum and its role in selection.
  • I have checked validity and the applicable reference date.
  • I have separated the admission test from language evidence.
  • I know result timing, reporting and receipt requirements.
  • I have reviewed the cycle guide, identification, centre and accessibility procedures.
  • I have calculated the full cost and allowed time for difficulties.
  • I have matched my name, score and document before submission.
  • I have resolved ambiguity through a reply about my programme and circumstances.

1️⃣6️⃣ Frequently asked questions

Are all international applicants exempt from ALES?
Do not generalise. The applicant category and programme determine what is needed, with possible alternatives or different university procedures.

Does every management subject require GMAT?
The subject name does not establish the test requirement. Read the programme's alternatives, versions and thresholds rather than inferring an obligation from common use.

Does exceeding the minimum guarantee admission?
No. An application may meet the consideration threshold while selection, documents, interview, resources and supervision remain relevant.

Can I apply before the result arrives?
Only as permitted by that programme and cycle. Check instructions, dates and required evidence. Taking the examination does not replace a required result.

Should I retake or broaden my options?
Compare the score gap, time and cost with the fit of alternative programmes. Expanding options helps when it opens suitable choices, not when it pushes you into a subject or route unrelated to your goal.
