Kırklareli: Türkiye’s Gateway to the Balkans
Geography
Kırklareli province lies in European Thrace, in the northwestern Marmara Region, directly bordering Bulgaria. It is an important part of the overland connection between Türkiye and the Balkans and a possible escape from Istanbul.
A place between cultures
The province combines a rural Thracian setting with Turkish and Balkan influences in its architecture, food and traditions. Its forests and countryside appeal to visitors seeking a slower pace away from a major metropolis.
Nature and local products
Parts of the Yıldız, also called Istranca, mountain forests extend towards the Black Sea. Honey, local cheese and wine-producing traditions are features of the province. For walks and camping, choose permitted routes or authorised sites and check seasonal restrictions.
History and culture
Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods have left archaeological sites, castles, mosques, baths and older houses throughout the province. Historic villages and neighbourhoods preserve traditional houses and traces of local life. See
the official tourism guide for the main heritage sites.
Getting there
Travel from Istanbul by road, allowing around two hours from some starting points and longer when traffic or the final district adds distance. The route towards the Dereköy border crossing continues north towards Bulgaria; check the crossing and entry requirements separately if travelling internationally.
Planning a visit
Spring and autumn can be pleasant for the countryside. Try village honey and fresh cheese, and allow time for forests and smaller settlements rather than rushing between them. Conditions, local access and crowds vary with the season.
