Isparta lies inland in south-western Türkiye, north of Antalya and close to Burdur. It forms part of the transition between the Mediterranean region and the Anatolian interior. Mountains, lakes and forests make it appealing for a quieter visit, with warm summers and colder winters than the coast.
Known as Türkiye's “City of Roses”, Isparta has been a centre for rose growing and the production of fragrant oils for more than a century. Its character combines Anatolian rural traditions, Ottoman heritage and a relaxed modern city atmosphere.
The Damask rose harvest generally falls in May and June, with timing affected by the weather. Pink fields supply rose oil used in the international perfume and cosmetics industry. Rose festivals and organised harvest visits allow visitors to experience the fields and take photographs with the growers' permission.
Nearby Lake Eğirdir and Lake Kovada offer waterside scenery. At Eğirdir, visitors may find designated swimming areas and locally available boating activities; Kovada is better approached as a protected nature area, following national park rules. Lakeside cafés and walks provide quieter alternatives. The surrounding mountains also offer hiking routes, particularly attractive in spring.
Süleyman Demirel University gives Isparta a youthful student presence. Local markets sell rose products, honey and fragrant oils, adding to the city's friendly, unhurried atmosphere.
- For the roses, plan around May or June and confirm the harvest dates locally.
- Rose oil and fragrances make distinctive souvenirs; choose clearly labelled products.
- Visit Eğirdir for lake views and sunset behind the mountains.
- Isparta and Antalya can be combined in a driving itinerary, allowing enough time for the inland journey.
