Choosing a bank in Türkiye involves comparing eligibility, branch access, digital services and the fees for the transactions you actually use. This guide retains its 2025 framing and looks at Ziraat Bankası, VakıfBank, Garanti BBVA, İş Bankası and Yapı Kredi.
Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: The original rankings for “easiest acceptance”, service quality and monthly fees were general impressions, not verified guarantees. Every bank applies identity, residence and compliance checks; state ownership does not guarantee an account without a residence permit. Consumer deposit-account maintenance charges also cannot be presented as a normal monthly fee. See BDDK’s account-fee explanation. The original İş Bankası Apple Pay claim was not established by Apple’s current country list.
1. State-controlled banks
Ziraat Bankası and VakıfBank are established options with branch and digital services. Ask the chosen branch about your nationality, residence/identity documents and purpose of the account before making a decision.Ziraat Bankası
- Offers TRY and supported foreign-currency account services, including USD and EUR products.
- Provides branch, ATM and digital banking services; check which languages are available for the task you need.
- Offers card products subject to the bank’s approval and current terms. A debit card is different from an approved credit card.
VakıfBank
- An established state-controlled bank with branch and remote-banking services.
- Offers TRY and supported foreign-currency banking products; confirm the precise account you need with the bank.
- May request official address evidence and other customer documents, as required for the application.
2. Private banks
Private banks also serve eligible foreign customers. They are not universally reserved for people with long-term residence or formal employment; the chosen bank assesses the individual application and product.Garanti BBVA
- Provides digital banking, account and card services under its current product terms.
- Offers foreign-currency account products; check current supported currencies and charges.
- Remote account opening is subject to its published identity/residence conditions. Its standard mobile onboarding instructions do not mean that every foreign-passport holder can open an account entirely in the app.
İş Bankası
- An established private bank with branch and digital banking services.
- Its current account-opening information describes applications by eligible foreign nationals using a YKN and passport information.
- Offers different card products; confirm the actual card network, fees and application conditions.
Yapı Kredi
- Provides branch and digital banking services, including products for eligible foreign customers.
- Offers supported foreign-currency and card/account services under its product terms.
- Check virtual-card eligibility and available interface/support languages for your particular account.
3. A practical comparison checklist
| Bank | Foreign-customer application | Digital/branch services | Currencies and charges |

| VakıfBank | Confirm requirements with the chosen branch | Check remote services and branch assistance | Confirm the desired currency account and service charges |
| Garanti BBVA | Branch and remote routes have specific eligibility rules | Compare available digital functions and support | Check account currencies, card terms and transaction tariff |

Choosing the right bank for you
- If you do not have a residence permit, ask whether the bank has an eligible non-resident route and what documents it requires; do not assume state banks must accept you.
- If digital banking matters most, check the functions you need and whether your identity document supports remote onboarding.
- Confirm that the branch or support channel can assist you in a language you understand.
- Keep your correct IBAN and current bank details securely, especially after any bank migration or account change.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hold accounts with more than one bank? You can generally apply to more than one bank. Each institution makes its own eligibility and compliance assessment. Are transfers between banks free? Fees depend on the provider, channel and account terms. Havale within the same bank is not universally free; some providers waive eligible domestic TRY transfer charges.
Are state-controlled banks better than private banks? There is no universal ranking. Compare the actual acceptance requirements, branch access, digital functions, language support and total service costs relevant to you.
Additional tips
