Rock-cut dwellings at Solaklar village in Seben.
Bolu's outlying towns and villages reveal considerable variety beyond its centre and famous lakes. Seben has dwellings carved into rock; Gerede combines an inland town's history with highland landscapes; and Mengen is associated with forests, pastures and a long-established culinary profession. Kıbrıscık completes the picture of the province's southern countryside.
Groups of houses and other spaces cut into the rock occur across the Seben area, with Solaklar and Muslar among the best-known examples. Openings and rooms occupy elevated rock masses, showing how the terrain was adapted for habitation and other uses. Their organised interiors reveal human workmanship, distinguishing them from natural caves.
Some sites have features associated with Christian use, including crosses and religious spaces. These help explain periods of occupation in antiquity and Byzantine times. Similar-looking openings do not establish that every site served the same function or dates to the same period. Consider each group through its surviving features and evidence, keeping proposed interpretations separate from firm dates.
Villages and farmland in southern Bolu add everyday life to the rock-cut heritage. Highlands and pastures extend across the Köroğlu Mountains and their slopes, with seasonal homes, local roads and work connected to the land. Kıbrıscık belongs to this mountain setting and is known for uplands with names including Belen, Karaköy and Kökez.
Pastures, agriculture and rural architecture reflect residents' relationship with seasonal change and the resources of the land. Distinguishing an inhabited village from a rock-cut archaeological site reveals a countryside with both continuing life and the memory of earlier settlement. Its interest lies in that variety, from fields and homes to slopes and carved chambers.

Gerede is a centre in eastern Bolu province with a history connected to inland settlement and routes through the region. Its historic and natural sights include fortifications such as Asar and Keçi castles and the surroundings of Esentepe, as well as nearby pastures and highlands. Together they show the connection between town and countryside.
Open ground, forest and seasonal life distinguish the highlands south of Gerede. Villages, agriculture, crafts and trade are part of this setting, while monuments in the town reflect settlement, observation and public services. Comparing the centre with the slopes gives a broader understanding of the district than visiting a single natural or historic landmark.
Mengen is a forested area in north-eastern Bolu, surrounded by highlands and meadows bearing numerous local names. Woodland, homes and villages show its relationship with natural resources and rural life. Its association with the culinary profession adds a cultural dimension to that landscape.
This heritage involves knowledge of ingredients, working practices and cooking techniques passed between generations, forming part of the local community's identity. Bolu's countryside brings this professional tradition together with farming, grazing, forestry and crafts. It gives Mengen a different character from Seben's rock-cut sites and Gerede's inland townscape, although all belong to the same province.
Check which parts of the rock-cut sites are accessible: some entrances are high or narrow and may not suit everyone. Protect historic markings and keep out of unsecured chambers. Village and highland roads differ from town roads, so check conditions during rain or snow and respect the privacy of homes and farmland.
