The closely grouped stone houses of Çukurca.
Çukurca offers a view of Hakkâri that brings together stone architecture and local food. Its old houses form a striking group on the slope, while products such as tahini introduce the skills of local production and their place in everyday district life.
With transport and the return journey arranged beforehand, devote a day to the houses, town centre and food. Choose a short walking route and leave time to study the façades and ask about local products, instead of seeing the town only through a car window.
The heritage group known as the stone houses or castle houses consists of 26 homes, among Çukurca's most recognisable examples of stone construction. Its significance lies as much in the closely connected townscape as in the details of individual buildings.
Begin with a broad view showing how the houses relate to the slope, then approach façades that are accessible. Do not assume every building is open: uses and conditions vary. Respect closed doors, private areas and site instructions.
Comfortable footwear and a short itinerary help you enjoy the architecture on its sloping terrain. Choose stable places to pause, keep passages clear for residents, and avoid climbing onto roofs or high spots for an unnecessary camera angle.
Focus on variations in the stonework, door openings and the relationship between buildings. Ask permission before photographing people or entering occupied premises. Appreciating heritage includes respecting its present use alongside its historic appearance.
Local tahini is made from sesame seeds roasted over an oak-wood fire and ground in stone mills. Its brown colour, texture and flavour reflect the roasting method. Çukurca tahini has a registered geographical indication associated with the area.
When buying, ask about the production date, ingredients and storage, and taste a small amount if possible. Compare packaging according to the product's origin and your travel needs. Before buying a large quantity, make sure you like it and can transport it appropriately.
Çukurca köfte among the area's local dishes.
Leave time to try a local dish available that day, such as the köfte shown among Çukurca's specialities, and ask about its ingredients before ordering. Menus vary between establishments, so base your meal on what is actually being prepared during your visit.
Combine a meal with a modest local purchase without turning the outing into a lengthy shopping list. If you will continue travelling afterwards, allow time to rest and store your purchases. Establish what can be eaten straight away and what needs refrigeration.
Make the stone houses your principal stop, then add the market and a nearby meal. Agree your return arrangements before starting out. If you want to include the Zab Valley, ask locally about a specific accessible stop along your route. Mountain journeys cannot be judged solely by how close points appear on a map.
