Where to Stay in Istanbul: Neighbourhoods for Different Travellers

First-time visitors often ask: “Taksim or Sultanahmet? The European side or the Asian side?” Your accommodation area affects everyday travel, the atmosphere of the trip and your budget, so it deserves as much attention as the hotel itself.

This guide compares popular visitor areas, including:
  • Their main advantages.
  • The travellers they may suit: families, younger visitors, honeymooners and those watching their budget.
  • Drawbacks and points to check.

1️⃣ 🗺️ Understanding the visitor map

Istanbul spans two sides:
  • The European side: home to many of the best-known historic sights and popular hotel districts.
  • The Asian side: offers neighbourhoods with a strong local atmosphere and some less tourist-focused areas. It also has busy centres and nightlife, so it is not uniformly quieter.
Key visitor areas include:
  • Sultanahmet: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace.
  • Taksim and İstiklal Street: shopping, restaurants, cafés and nightlife.
  • The Bosphorus: palaces, bridges and waterside views.

2️⃣ 🗺️ European-side accommodation areas

1️⃣ Sultanahmet

May suit: first-time visitors, history enthusiasts and older travellers who want major sights within walking reach, provided the hotel's exact route and gradients suit them.
Advantages:
  • Walking access from many hotels to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and, a little farther away, the Grand Bazaar. Check the individual distance.
  • A useful base for reducing transport journeys when historic sights are the priority.
  • Historic streets and traditional Turkish restaurants.
Drawbacks:
  • Less suited to modern shopping centres or nightlife than some other districts, although historic shopping is nearby.
  • Travel is needed to larger malls and several Bosphorus areas.
  • Some streets are very quiet at night, which may disappoint visitors wanting lively evenings.

2️⃣ Taksim and Beyoğlu

May suit: younger travellers and anyone who enjoys shopping, cafés, nightlife and a lively city setting.
Advantages:
  • Access to İstiklal Street, restaurants, cafés and international shops.
  • A central base with useful public-transport connections, depending on the exact address.
  • A broad range of hotels and serviced apartments at different levels.
Drawbacks:
  • Crowds and late-night noise in the busiest areas.
  • Some side streets have nightlife or an atmosphere that may not match a conservative family's preferences. Assess the street rather than judging all of Beyoğlu alike.

3️⃣ Şişli and Nişantaşı

May suit: families wanting shopping and transport access with a carefully chosen quieter street, and travellers more interested in modern shopping than historic sights.
Advantages:
  • Access to Cevahir and other shopping areas, depending on where you stay within this large district.
  • Lively streets with a choice of restaurants and cafés. Check the immediate surroundings and recent feedback rather than assuming the district guarantees safety.
  • A useful range of options for a longer stay.
Drawbacks:
  • You will usually need transport to the main old-city sights.
  • Some hotels in upscale neighbourhoods such as Nişantaşı can be expensive.

4️⃣ Beşiktaş and Ortaköy

May suit: travellers wanting Bosphorus views, waterfront cafés, boat trips and a lively local atmosphere.
Advantages:
  • Access to the Bosphorus and bridge views, with ferry services from relevant piers.
  • Seaside restaurants and cafés, including attractive evening settings.
  • Beşiktaş can be useful for Asian-side ferry journeys. Check the actual pier and timetable; Ortaköy's services should not be assumed to match Beşiktaş's regular connections.
Drawbacks:
  • Some streets climb steeply away from the waterfront.
  • Road traffic can be heavy at peak times.
  • Some hotels are small, and not every room has a direct sea view.

3️⃣ 🗺️ Asian-side accommodation areas

1️⃣ Kadıköy

May suit: younger travellers, visitors interested in local neighbourhood life and returning guests wanting a different base. Prices may offer value, but compare actual dates rather than assuming the Asian side is cheaper.
Advantages:
  • A wide range of traditional and contemporary restaurants and cafés at different prices.
  • Ferry connections to the European side, alongside metro and other rail connections according to the route.
  • An everyday local atmosphere away from the main tourist concentrations in Sultanahmet and Taksim, although central Kadıköy itself can be busy.
Drawbacks:
  • Allow travel time to many European-side historic sights.
  • It may be less convenient for a very short first visit focused almost entirely on those sights.

2️⃣ Üsküdar

May suit: families and travellers seeking waterfront views and a more traditional atmosphere in selected streets, while checking the bustle around the centre and piers.
Advantages:
  • Bosphorus and Maiden's Tower views from suitable waterfront locations.
  • Historic mosques and neighbourhoods with a more conservative atmosphere.
  • Useful ferry connections to the European side; check crossings and last services for your plans.
Drawbacks:
  • The concentration of tourist-oriented services differs from Taksim or Sultanahmet.
  • Daily European-side sightseeing requires planning around the crossing and onward journey.

4️⃣ 🔎 Matching the area to your trip

  • A first visit of four or five days: compare Sultanahmet and Taksim. One possible split is Taksim plus a night in Sultanahmet, although a single base may save moving time.
  • A family with children: compare Şişli, selected parts of Beşiktaş or a quieter street near useful transport.
  • Younger travellers wanting nightlife: compare Taksim, parts of Beyoğlu and Kadıköy.
  • A honeymoon with romantic views: compare Ortaköy, other Bosphorus locations and particular hotels with a confirmed water-view room.
  • Two weeks or longer: compare Şişli, Kadıköy or residential areas close to useful metro routes and everyday services.

5️⃣ 📝 Before booking your Istanbul hotel

  • Look beyond the neighbourhood name and check the actual route to a useful metro or tram station.
  • Read recent guest reviews, alongside older feedback.
  • Check cancellation terms and extra costs, including taxes, breakfast and valet parking.
  • On a short trip, minimise hotel changes to save time and effort.
  • Save the Turkish hotel name and address on your phone for taxis or asking directions.
