Where to Eat in Istanbul: Neighbourhoods for Restaurants and Cafés

Istanbul is enormous, and there is no single answer to “Where can we find somewhere good to eat?”
Each neighbourhood has its own atmosphere, restaurants and café culture.

1) Taksim and İstiklal Avenue

  • Fast food, kebabs, döner, sweet shops, and international and local cafés.
  • A good fit for younger visitors and anyone who enjoys busy streets and nightlife.
  • Watch out for expensive tourist-oriented restaurants in some of the side streets.

2) Fatih and Sultanahmet

  • Traditional Turkish restaurants serving kebabs, soups and home-style dishes.
  • Close to the main historic sights.
  • The area offers places frequented by both visitors and local residents.

3) Kadıköy and Moda – The Asian Side ☕

  • A favourite area for contemporary cafés and restaurants with a youthful feel.
  • Streets lined with seafood restaurants, international food, sweet shops and speciality coffee.
  • The atmosphere often feels more local, with a strong Turkish resident clientele alongside visitors.

4) Üsküdar and Çamlıca

  • Restaurants and cafés overlooking the Bosphorus.
  • Suitable for families and visitors who prefer a relatively relaxed atmosphere.
  • Combine a meal with a visit to Çamlıca Hill or the Grand Çamlıca Mosque.

5) Other Neighbourhoods Worth Trying

  • Beşiktaş: breakfast restaurants and popular meeting places for young people.
  • Nişantaşı: smart cafés and international restaurants.
  • Eminönü: fish sandwiches, sweets and the Spice Bazaar.

Instead of searching for “the best restaurant in Istanbul”,
choose a neighbourhood that suits your tastes, then walk around and see which places appeal to you.
