A declined payment at a busy checkout is inconvenient, but a calm check can help identify the problem without creating duplicate charges.

1. Common reasons
• Insufficient available funds on a debit account, or insufficient available credit.
• A purchase or transaction limit being reached. An ATM withdrawal limit is a separate control and does not normally describe a shop purchase.
• The relevant payment feature, such as contactless or online use, being unavailable or restricted.
• A problem with the terminal or the merchant's connection.
• A bank security check or card restriction.
• For online purchases, a failed authentication or 3-D Secure step.

The exact reason depends on the issuer and transaction. A decline does not necessarily mean the card is permanently blocked.

2. What to try in the shop
First ask whether the terminal shows a decline, an incomplete attempt or a successful payment. Check your app for a transaction or pending authorisation before repeating the payment.

If appropriate, insert the chip and follow the PIN instructions instead of tapping. Contactless may be another option when the terminal and bank permit it, but it should not be used to work around a security instruction requiring the chip and PIN.

Ask the cashier to check the terminal or connection. A short pause can help with a temporary connection problem, but there is no fixed waiting time that guarantees success. Use a backup card or modest cash if needed.

3. If the restriction is at the bank
Check the available balance, purchase limits, relevant payment settings and any genuine approval request inside the official app. Contact the bank through a verified channel if the reason remains unclear.

A supported mobile wallet may be an alternative, but it can still depend on the same card, bank and available limit. It will not necessarily solve an issuer decline.

4. Prepare an alternative
Keep a practical backup payment method, use limits appropriate to your needs and enable available notifications. Keep the receipt if the merchant says a payment succeeded or was cancelled.

Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: No verified basis was found for the original guide's claim that 90% of declines have three particular causes. If an amount appears twice or remains pending, ask the merchant and issuer to check the actual records rather than assuming every attempt failed.
