WhatsApp can be part of everyday social life in Türkiye, connecting family members, colleagues, neighbours, school communities and small circles of friends. The way people reply, participate, delay responding or remain silent may therefore carry more social meaning than a newcomer expects.

In family groups, simply taking part can be a way of maintaining relationships. Offering congratulations, asking after someone, responding to important news or adding a well-timed emoji may be enough to show interest. A long absence or no response to a significant family occasion may also be noticed.

In smaller groups of friends, neighbours or fellow students, the tone of a written reply matters. A brief answer can seem cool or friendly depending on its wording and context. A delay may be entirely ordinary, or occasionally read as a lack of interest. Not every late reply causes difficulty, but repeated silence or its timing around a sensitive event can prompt people to attach meaning to it.

Groups also have different purposes. Some mainly share information, others exchange greetings and congratulations, while others provide a space for keeping in touch. Misunderstanding a group's purpose can lead someone to write at length where brevity is preferred, or remain silent when a small acknowledgement would have been welcome.

In some circles, courtesy online is closely connected to courtesy in person. Just as attending a visit or occasion can matter, responding to a message may have a similar, though lighter, significance. People may notice who replied, offered congratulations, left a message unanswered or chose to respond privately rather than in the group.

For extended families living in different cities, a WhatsApp group can become an extension of the family gathering. Greetings, congratulations, condolences, news and some customary expressions of support move onto the phone. Leaving the group or rarely responding may consequently have a social impact, rather than being understood solely as a technical preference.

This does not mean that everyone takes a delayed reply or limited participation personally. Attitudes differ greatly between generations and social settings. Some use WhatsApp in a straightforward, practical way; others attach more significance to it. The useful point is that messages can sometimes become a place where relationships are interpreted, as well as information exchanged.

Understanding this can help foreign residents avoid unintended signals. A short reply, timely congratulation or simple enquiry may make a positive impression. Equally, prolonged silence around an important personal event may sometimes be read negatively even when no slight was intended.

WhatsApp groups can be a small but meaningful extension of relationships beyond the screen. Learning when to contribute, when to keep a reply brief and when a simple acknowledgement is enough offers a useful insight into contemporary social life in Türkiye.
