University Admission Exams in Türkiye 2026: TR-YÖS, SAT and Language Tests
Getting started
Students often begin with the wrong question: “Do I need YÖS or SAT?” First establish whether you qualify for international admission, then choose your university, degree programme and teaching language. Those decisions determine which evidence you need.
The main distinctions
- TR-YÖS is the central international undergraduate admissions examination administered by ÖSYM. It assesses numerical aptitude and basic mathematics.
- SAT is another possible academic admissions qualification where the university explicitly accepts it.
- TOEFL or IELTS are English language tests. An accepted result may satisfy a language requirement or exempt you from a preparatory year; it does not replace the academic admission requirements.
1. What does YÖS mean today?
Older guides describe separate university YÖS examinations. For a 2026 application, distinguish those historical arrangements from TR-YÖS. State universities stopped conducting their own international admissions examinations from the 2024–25 academic year. Check the central exam and the university’s current selection criteria rather than booking an old university-specific test.
TR-YÖS preparation centres on numerical reasoning, mathematics and relevant geometry. It can suit applicants targeting competitive programmes at universities that accept the result. A score is evidence for an application, not an automatic university placement.
2. When can SAT be useful?
SAT may suit you if your English and mathematics are strong, your target university accepts it, or you also intend to apply outside Türkiye. It is not accepted universally, and a university may specify a total score, a mathematics score, a validity period and a score-reporting procedure. Meeting a minimum does not guarantee an offer.
3. Language tests and the preparatory year
For an English-taught programme, consult the university’s current proficiency and exemption table before paying for a test. Check the accepted examination, version, delivery method, test centre conditions, minimum score and validity period. IELTS is not accepted by every Turkish university. For example, METU excludes IELTS tests taken on or after 24 December 2022.
A university may offer its own proficiency examination. Being fluent does not necessarily remove the requirement for official evidence. Academic admission and permission to start degree courses can be separate decisions.
4. A practical decision process
- Check your applicant category. Nationality and your high school history matter. In 2026, many foreign nationals who studied at or graduated from high school in Türkiye must use YKS, subject to the specified exceptions. Ask the university to confirm your route.
- Compare institutions. A state university may assess TR-YÖS, SAT or another approved qualification. A foundation university may use school results or examinations; selective programmes and scholarships can still be highly competitive.
- Check the teaching language. English programmes require accepted English evidence or the university’s proficiency route. Turkish programmes require the Turkish evidence or preparation specified by the university; do not assume every TÖMER certificate is interchangeable.
- Check the programme. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and some engineering programmes may have stricter conditions and stronger competition.
- Read the official international admissions notice. Record the qualifications, deadlines and documents for the exact programme and year.
5. Preparing efficiently
- TR-YÖS: build mathematics and reasoning fundamentals, then practise accurately under timed conditions.
- SAT: prepare both Reading and Writing and Math using the current digital format and regular practice.
- English proficiency: work on the skills required by your accepted test. Feedback on speaking and writing can help, but use a diagnostic test to identify your own priorities.
6. Common mistakes
- Preparing for an exam before checking whether your chosen university accepts it.
- Securing an academic offer while overlooking language conditions and the possible cost of a preparatory year.
- Accepting an agent’s “no examination needed” assurance without confirmation from the university.
7. Frequently asked questions
Is TR-YÖS compulsory at every state university? Check the current accepted qualifications and your eligibility; do not assume there is one admissions route for every programme.
Can SAT replace TR-YÖS? It can serve as your academic application qualification if the university accepts it for your programme and category.
Can TOEFL or IELTS exempt me from preparation? Only an accepted test result meeting the university’s conditions can do so. A high score in a test the university does not accept will not provide that exemption.
Before you book
Choose the university, programme and language first. Confirm your eligibility and accepted academic qualification, then arrange the appropriate language evidence. Keep the official notices with your application records.
