Why did this matter?
TÜİK’s bulletin released on 3 February 2026 showed annual inflation of 30.65% in January, lower than in December 2025, while monthly inflation rose to 4.84%. These are dated January figures, rather than the latest release. That could be an encouraging signal for markets, but it did not mean that prices had become cheap or that economic pressures had ended. Monthly inflation actually increased, so a lower annual rate should not be confused with slower price rises during January itself.
What can easing annual inflation mean for residents and investors?
- If a sustained easing in price pressures develops, it could eventually moderate pressure for rent increases. January’s annual figure alone does not establish that this has happened, and renewal rules still matter.
- A continuing disinflation trend could help support later changes in interest rates and financing conditions.
- Market confidence may improve. Expectations can influence pricing and investment decisions as well as measured costs.
Three common misunderstandings
1) Annual inflation can decline partly because current prices are compared with a period of particularly sharp increases: the base effect.2) The official inflation basket may differ from your own spending. Food or housing costs can rise faster than the headline average.
3) Exchange-rate movements and changes in energy or import costs can renew upward pressure on prices.
Practical ways to respond
The main takeaway
Easing annual inflation can be encouraging, but it is a signal rather than a guarantee.Use monthly figures and relevant spending categories alongside the headline rate.
