Turkish Citizenship Applications 2026: Stages, Interview and Tracking
Citizenship applications pass through several administrative stages, but there is no single timetable for every route. Residence-based naturalisation, marriage, investment, reacquisition and citizenship by descent involve different legal tests. Online status messages describe progress; they are not guaranteed decision dates or assurances of approval.

1. Choose the correct route
Identify whether the application concerns general naturalisation after qualifying residence, marriage, investment, reacquisition, birth or descent, adoption, a right of choice or another exceptional category. Choosing the wrong basis can lead to refusal to accept the file or an irrelevant document request.
2. Appointment and documents
Check the relevant population directorate's appointment instructions. Istanbul's 2026 guidance refers to Alo 199 and the NVI appointment service. Before attending, check passport validity, residence where required, consistent names and birth dates, apostille or consular authentication, Turkish translations, service fees, consent for children and relevant judgments concerning divorce, custody, name changes or convictions.
3. Submission and registration
In Türkiye, applications go through the competent governorate or provincial population and citizenship directorate; applications abroad go through the Turkish mission where the route permits. Personal attendance or a specially authorised representative is required according to the procedure. Fingerprinting requirements mean personal attendance. Postal applications are not accepted.Once formally registered, the file receives a başvuru no, an application reference used for tracking. NVI illustrates the format as 12345-12345.
4. Initial document checks
The local authority checks forms and signatures, passport and residence records, birth and civil-status records, child consent and guardianship documents, translations, authentication, the receipt and route-specific evidence such as residence time, marriage duration or investment conformity. Respond within any period set for missing documents; silence can stop or end processing.
5. Administrative and security enquiries
Checks may cover entry and exit records, lawful residence and work, convictions and court decisions, genuine family life in marriage cases, actual address, work and income, security and public order, and document authenticity. Local enquiries may involve the police before a file reaches the commission. A lengthy stage can reflect responses awaited from several authorities or an overseas mission rather than a problem with the application.
6. Commission and interview
General naturalisation: the commission normally examines Turkish communication, personal and family details, reasons for settling, employment, income, address and consistency with the documents.Marriage: enquiries focus on the genuine relationship, continuing family life, knowledge of each other, home and family, absence of a sham arrangement and conduct compatible with marriage. Spouses may be interviewed together or separately.
Investment: do not assume every investor must take the language interview used for general naturalisation. Identity, security, investment and family documents still require verification.
Descent: the focus is on birth, records and the parent-child relationship rather than language or integration.
Preparing for the interview
Answer naturally and truthfully. Review dates of marriage, residence, work and previous addresses, disclose earlier marriages, divorce and children, bring requested originals and ask for clarification if a question is unclear. Do not memorise artificial answers or use an unapproved interpreter where an official interpreter is required.
7. Central review
After local examination, the file goes to the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs within the Ministry of Interior. It reviews the legal basis, security reports, commission findings, central records, foreign documents, family members, investment conformity and unresolved discrepancies.A file may be returned for further documents or enquiries, so repeated or apparently earlier tracking stages do not automatically mean refusal.

8. Final archive and security checks
The relevant authorities complete their enquiries. A private agency or intermediary cannot guarantee the result or bypass the process. “Archive research” or “under examination” indicates continuing review without revealing its outcome.

9. Decision preparation
The decision-maker depends on the route. Some applications are decided by the Ministry of Interior; exceptional routes may require a presidential decision; citizenship from birth involves determination and registration. Files can also return for completion or end in refusal. Meeting the conditions does not create an absolute right to naturalisation.
10. Tracking the application
Use the official e-Devlet citizenship application enquiry or the NVI “What stage is my application at?” service. The reference and date of birth may be required, or e-Devlet authentication. Obtain the reference from the provincial directorate or NVI public relations; NVI's guidance also provides for references through diplomatic missions for applications submitted there after 10 November 2024.Messages can refer to registration, document examination, dispatch to the General Directorate, archive research, inclusion in a decision list, submission to the decision-maker or completion and notification. These are not a universal sequence, and further evidence can send a file back to an earlier stage.

How long does it take?
There is no guaranteed common processing period. A local service standard of 20 minutes to prepare a file or 10–15 minutes for an interview describes that local task, not the overall citizenship decision. Total time depends on the route, completeness, countries issuing documents, security checks, matching identities, family size, further enquiries and workload.
If the status does not change
Check the reference and birth date, contact the office that accepted the file, ask specifically about missing documents, maintain passport and residence validity, update address and phone details, and report marriage, divorce, birth or a new passport. A recorded written enquiry or CİMER request can help route a question, but CİMER cannot grant citizenship or override checks.
A child turning 18 during processing
NVI states that a child who reaches adulthood before the parent's procedure is completed must be considered in their independent adult status rather than acquire citizenship through the parent in the same way. An individual application may be required if a statutory route is available. Raise an approaching birthday early.
After approval
Receive the acquisition notification, complete population registration, check names, civil status and children's details, and apply for the Turkish identity card. A passport application follows the required identity registration steps. The approval notice alone does not replace an identity card application to the population office or mission.
2026 application service fees
- General naturalisation, marriage or adoption: TRY 957.26.
- Reacquisition or right of choice: TRY 505.72.
- Exceptional citizenship: TRY 135.45.

Avoidable delays
Common causes include unreported passport changes, expired residence, an outdated address, inconsistent names, omitted children or former marriages, unanswered document requests, excessive absence in a residence-based route, and expired or unauthenticated papers. An intermediary cannot change an administrative stage simply by promising to do so.
Read the actual decision
A tracking entry is a brief administrative update. It is not a detailed legal decision or a substitute for formal notification of approval or refusal.
