For many travellers, Trabzon brings to mind the Black Sea landscape, Uzungöl and Rize.
Yet the city and its surroundings also have important historic and religious sights: cliffside monasteries, former churches now used as mosques, grand houses and museums.
This guide brings together Trabzon's museums, fortifications and historic landmarks,
with links to detailed articles to help you choose and plan your visits.

Sümela Monastery: Built against the Mountain
Sümela Monastery — Sümela Manastırı is one of the Black Sea region's best-known landmarks,
built against a high cliff in the Altındere Valley, almost as though attached to the mountain.
Why visit?
- A dramatic setting among forests, mountains and occasional mist.
- A long history as an Orthodox monastery, with religious and cultural significance for the region.
Important points:
- Reaching it involves a mountain road journey by coach or car, followed by a walking approach with uphill sections and steps; confirm current final-transfer arrangements.
- It can feel cool even in summer, so bring a light extra layer.

Trabzon Hagia Sophia: A Church and Mosque beside the Sea
Trabzon Hagia Sophia — Trabzon Ayasofya Camii is a historic building in the Byzantine tradition, later converted into a mosque.
Much smaller than İstanbul's Hagia Sophia, it offers a more intimate encounter with the region's history.
What will you see?
- Byzantine exterior architecture, a relatively small dome and carved decoration.
- Historic paintings and decoration in some areas, depending on conservation and worship arrangements; not every fresco is uncovered.
- Grounds and views towards the nearby Black Sea, with space to pause and take photographs while respecting the mosque.

Atatürk Pavilion: A Historic House in Gardens
Atatürk Pavilion — Atatürk Köşkü is an elegant historic house on the slopes above Trabzon.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed there during a visit, and it is now a memorial house and museum.
What makes it distinctive?
- An attractive surrounding garden for walking and photographs.
- Period-furnished rooms, photographs and documents relating to Atatürk and the Republic.

from ancient remains through the Ottoman period to the early Republic.
What will you find?
- Regional archaeological finds, including coins, pottery and tools.
- Displays about former life in Trabzon, with historic photographs and documents; the museum reopened in May 2025 with a redesigned display.

Trabzon Castle and City Walls
Trabzon Castle consists of surviving walls and fortifications that once defended the city.
Sections remain visible in several parts of Trabzon.
Why visit?
- For those who enjoy seeing historic remains from public outdoor spaces; access to restoration areas or the walls themselves should not be assumed.
- A chance to walk beside old defences and find city views where public routes permit.

Boztepe Hill: A Classic Trabzon View
Boztepe overlooks Trabzon and the Black Sea.
Although it is not primarily an archaeological sight, it is one of the classic places to see the city from above.
What makes it appealing?
- Panoramic views across the city and sea.
- Tea gardens and places to sit, especially appealing around sunset, although that can also be a busy time.

- With two days:
- Day one: Sümela Monastery and Trabzon Hagia Sophia.
- Day two: Atatürk Pavilion, Trabzon Museum, a walk beside the city walls and Boztepe; check museum closing days before choosing the order.
