TR-YÖS or SAT in Türkiye 2026: Choosing an Exam and Preparing Effectively

International applicants often hear about YÖS and SAT, then spend months preparing before discovering that their chosen university does not accept the result. Begin with your eligibility and the programme’s current admission rules, then choose the examination that supports a realistic application.

1. Understanding TR-YÖS
For a current application, distinguish TR-YÖS, administered centrally by ÖSYM, from older examinations organised by universities. State universities stopped conducting their own international admissions examinations from the 2024–25 academic year.

TR-YÖS focuses on numerical aptitude and basic mathematics. Preparation can include algebra, geometry, patterns and problem-solving. It may suit an applicant with strong mathematics who prefers this assessment, provided the university accepts it and the applicant qualifies for the route. It is not automatically an easier or shorter path to admission.

2. Understanding SAT
SAT is the College Board’s standardised admissions test, used by some Turkish universities and institutions elsewhere. The current digital examination contains both Reading and Writing and Math; English is not an optional section simply because a university also specifies a mathematics minimum.

Its wider use can be helpful when applying in more than one country. However, neither Turkish acceptance nor a successful application is universal. Check the exact programme, total and section thresholds, score validity and reporting procedure.

3. Choosing between the two
  • Consider TR-YÖS when your target institutions accept it and its mathematical and reasoning content fits your strengths.
  • Consider SAT when your institutions accept it, your English preparation is realistic and its use in other applications would benefit you.
  • Compare diagnostic results, deadlines and the time available. The name of the exam alone cannot tell you which route will be quicker or more competitive for your application.

4. Before opening a textbook
Read the university’s official international admissions pages and record:
  • Whether your citizenship and high school history qualify you for the international route. Many applicants educated in Turkish high schools must use YKS in 2026, subject to specified exceptions.
  • Whether TR-YÖS or SAT is accepted for your programme and category, and which scores and validity conditions apply.
  • The English or Turkish proficiency evidence required, or the university’s preparatory/proficiency route. Do not assume IELTS is accepted.
  • Examination registration dates, university application dates and final enrolment deadlines. These are separate processes.

5. An eight-week preparation framework
  • Weeks 1–2: strengthen equations, ratios, algebra, word problems and relevant geometry. For SAT, begin Reading and Writing practice from the start.
  • Weeks 3–4: practise a range of questions and improve pacing. Include numerical aptitude for TR-YÖS, or English reading and written-language skills for SAT.
  • Weeks 5–6: complete full practice tests, for example twice a week if your schedule allows. Analyse errors and revisit recurring weaknesses.
  • Week 7: refine timing with practice in the actual format. Balance new instruction with enough independent problem-solving.
  • Week 8: consolidate with lighter revision and shorter sets, and maintain a sensible sleep routine before the test.
This is an example, not a promised preparation period or score. Extend it if your foundations need more time.

6. Mistakes that undermine an application
  • Preparing for an examination that the target institution does not accept.
  • Splitting time between SAT and TR-YÖS without enough benefit or preparation time.
  • Studying only without timed practice, leaving you accurate but too slow.
  • Ignoring language conditions, translations, score reporting or other required documents.

7. Frequently asked questions
Is TR-YÖS difficult? It requires sound mathematics and reasoning as well as accurate work under time limits. Difficulty depends on your starting point.
Is SAT always better? No. Choose an accepted qualification that suits your goals and preparation; neither examination guarantees quicker admission.
What can improve my prospects? Confirmed eligibility, appropriate academic results and a complete application submitted within the official calendar.

Share your intended city, university and subject if you would like help discussing the available routes. Any proposed score target should be tied to the university’s published criteria and the uncertainty of competitive selection.
