İstanbul brings together history, the sea, markets and modern city life.
In a single day you might pray in a centuries-old mosque, shop in a modern mall, drink coffee beside the Bosphorus and finish with an evening cruise.
This guide brings together the main activities and experiences in İstanbul,
to help families or friends build a balanced three-to-five-day itinerary without wasting time.
a classic day in Sultanahmet
Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Mosque, the Blue Mosque:- See Hagia Sophia from outside or visit the appropriate interior section, according to the admission arrangements in force. Cultural sightseeing and access for worship have different arrangements.

practical tips for an enjoyable visit
Avoid trying to see everything in three days:- İstanbul is very large. Choose:
- – A day for history,
- – A day for the sea and markets,
- – A day for entertainment and new experiences,
so that you spend less of your trip travelling between distant places.
Mix historic and modern İstanbul:- Include more than malls alone or mosque visits alone.
- A varied itinerary helps you experience more of the city.
Use public transport where practical:- The metro, trams and ferries offer a local experience and can save money and time, depending on your route.
- Use İstanbulkart on services that accept it; sightseeing cruises and other special products can have separate tickets.
Keep weather-dependent plans flexible:- This applies particularly to the Bosphorus, islands and water-based activities.
- Keep a spare day or alternative plan for changes caused by rain or wind.
Experiencing the city:
İstanbul rewards exploring step by step:
walk through old lanes, travel along the Bosphorus, bargain where appropriate in the bazaars, and try a Turkish bath or an evening beside the water.
Choose the activities that suit your time and budget,
and aim for a mixture of history, the sea, markets and entertainment,
so that your memories reflect the city's everyday experiences as well as its most photogenic sights.
