Sivas, in Central Anatolia, has a long history shaped by several civilisations. Its monuments and snowy winter mountain landscapes appeal to visitors interested in both history and the outdoors.
Important monuments include Gök Medrese and Ulu Cami, the Great Mosque. Seljuk and Ottoman buildings, stone façades and detailed carving reveal successive periods of the city’s architectural history.
Winters are cold and snow can be substantial. The city and surrounding highlands can look striking under snow, although conditions vary from year to year. In warmer months, rural landscapes and meadows provide a different setting; greenery depends on rainfall and the time of summer.
Sivas offers a comparatively unhurried urban atmosphere and institutions including Sivas Cumhuriyet University. Road and rail connections link it with other cities: high-speed trains serve Ankara, while Kayseri is reached by other available road or conventional-rail services rather than a direct operating high-speed line.
- December to February may appeal to visitors seeking snow, subject to weather and road conditions.
- Try madımak, a local greens dish, and Sivas köftesi, the city’s meatballs.
- Explore the castle-hill area, now associated with Kale Park, and the historic bathhouses. Check individual sites’ current visiting or bathing arrangements.
