Starting Para Sport in Türkiye 2026: Clubs, Classification and Participation
Would you like to try an appropriate activity or progress into organised competition? Start by identifying the sport, programme and responsible authority, then establish licensing and classification requirements. A disability-report percentage does not automatically determine a sport class, and recreational activity does not have identical classification requirements. This participant and family guide uses selected sources reviewed on 28 October 2026, leaving individual assessments to qualified authorities.

Identify your aim before requesting classification
Distinguish trying an activity or training regularly from entering classified Para competition. The Turkish Paralympic Committee explains that physical activity itself does not require sporting classification, while classified competition requires eligibility and a class under the sport’s rules. You can therefore ask about an appropriate starting programme without assuming you first need an international class number.
Ask about coaching experience, support needs, access to the court or pool, changing facilities and equipment. An accessibility label alone does not explain the entrance route or transfer assistance. Describe practical requirements and arrange a suitable introductory session before purchasing a full season whose arrangements you have not established.
Find the sport’s federation, rather than a generic disability label
Responsibilities differ by sport and category in Türkiye. For example, the swimming federation, TYF, publishes a Para Yüzme route, while TBESF presents disciplines including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and amputee football. Identify responsibility before circulating the same file to different organisations.
Begin with a club or discipline representative, requesting the federation name, current instructions and any assessment opportunity. Foreign status, licensing, age and event eligibility remain separate matters. Training acceptance does not guarantee representation of Türkiye or international entry. Deaf sport also has pathways distinct from the Paralympic Games programme.
| Your first question | Relevant route | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| I want to try an activity | Suitable programme, coach and facility | Training itself awards a sport class |
| I want domestic competition | Federation, club and event rules | A disability report alone establishes entry |
| I want international competition | International rules and national pathway | A national class is accepted at every event |
What does sporting classification decide?
Classification assesses eligibility and the impairment’s effect on the sport’s fundamental tasks, grouping athletes under discipline-specific rules. Someone may meet one sport’s minimum criteria but not another’s. That does not question whether their impairment exists. A diagnosis or disability percentage alone does not establish a class, and a class number does not rank talent.
Separate Sport Class from Sport Class Status, which addresses possible further assessment or a review date under the system. Keep both with the decision date. IPC explains that some international events may accept national classification, while further stages require the international federation’s process. Neither arrangement should be assumed for every competition.
Prepare the application and appointment correctly
Ask the federation about the diagnostic form completed by a qualified professional, supporting medical documents, consent, submission channel and deadline. Avoid public comments for sensitive records or images. Confirm that the form belongs to the current discipline and that the appointment concerns athlete assessment rather than a course for classifiers.
A Turkish swimming regulation for the completed August 2026 Çorum championship illustrates the distinction. Classification appointments were separate from race entries through the federation portal, with different documentation for physical and visual impairments. This is a procedural example from a past event, not open registration or a universal current document checklist.
TBESF’s current index provides routes to a classification application and consent/data information. Ask the authority for the approved version and submission procedure. A form on a website does not establish a scheduled session or application acceptance. For a minor, confirm parental consent and companion requirements before arranging travel.
| File | Purpose | Before submitting |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and licence | Match athlete and discipline | Check name, identity number and season |
| Diagnosis and medical evidence | Support eligibility assessment | Use the authority’s form and channel |
| Consent and appointment request | Arrange assessment and data handling | Keep confirmation and attendance instructions |
| Competition entry | Register event/category/team participation | Do not confuse it with assessment booking |
Prepare for assessment and understand the decision
Request instructions for location, timing, clothing, equipment, companions and any needed interpretation. Depending on the sport, assessment can involve documents, examination, sport-specific tasks and observation. Cooperate honestly; do not imitate a lower performance to seek a different class.
Afterwards, request an explanation of the class, status and any outstanding requirement or review date. If a published list differs from the decision, seek correction through the authority rather than choosing a preferred code. For an objection, establish who may submit it, the deadline, fee and required documents. There is no single deadline across every sport.
Budget for starting and for assistance
Separate coaching, membership, licensing, equipment, transport and accommodation. Ask whether equipment is available for an introductory session before buying specialist items. An everyday wheelchair is not automatically competition equipment, and an athlete’s photograph cannot establish what an individual needs.
Confirm companion costs, vehicle access, room and facility access, and the assistance actually agreed. No verified nationwide tariff or funding guarantee applies here. Any financial support has the provider’s conditions and should be confirmed before committing to travel expenses.
Plan the route from the first session to competition
Start with an accessible programme and a coach familiar with the discipline, then assess attendance and equipment needs. If competition becomes the aim, request a clear checklist: valid licensing, assessment where required, correct class and status, and event acceptance. Progress depends on your programme; one introductory experience does not determine your entire sporting pathway.
Keep decisions, dates and correspondence together, checking updates before registering or travelling. A domestic win or camp invitation does not itself provide a Paralympic Games place. Qualification, selection and approval remain separate. Focus on the next confirmed step rather than a promised medal or international appearance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need classification to start recreational activity?
It is not a general requirement for physical activity. Confirm programme suitability and arrangements with the provider.
Does my disability percentage establish my class?
Classification is sport-specific and cannot be inferred from that percentage alone.
Is national classification sufficient internationally?
The international federation and event determine when it is accepted and when another assessment is required.
Does booking classification register me for competition?
They can be separate applications. Keep confirmation of each process.
Does ineligibility in one sport prevent all sporting activity?
The decision concerns a particular competition framework. Discuss appropriate programmes and disciplines with qualified providers.
