The Süper Lig is the heart of club football in Türkiye. It attracts viewers abroad, including many supporters in the Arab world, as well as visitors planning to watch a match in Istanbul, Trabzon or Ankara.

This guide explains the league, its leading clubs, ways to follow it and the practicalities of attending a game.

1️⃣ An Introduction to the Süper Lig

Türkiye's highest football division brings together some of the region's best-known clubs. It is associated with passionate support, intense rivalries at the top of the table and, in successful seasons, significant European campaigns, particularly from Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş.

Istanbul, Trabzon, Ankara and İzmir are important football cities. The clubs and other cities represented in the top division change through promotion and relegation.

2️⃣ How the League Works

Each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away. A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none.

The team with the most points finishes as champions, with the competition's tie-breaking rules used if needed. Clubs at the bottom are relegated to the second tier, while promoted clubs move up from the 1. Lig.

The leading positions also matter for entry into the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. The precise allocation depends on the season's UEFA access rules, league position and the Turkish Cup route, rather than a permanent identical set of places every year.

3️⃣ The Major Clubs to Know

Galatasaray
Türkiye's record league champions have supporters throughout the country and a substantial following abroad, including in the Arab world. Their Istanbul stadium is known for an exceptionally loud atmosphere on major occasions.

Fenerbahçe
One of the oldest and most widely supported clubs, Fenerbahçe are based on Istanbul's Asian side. Sustained, determined backing is a defining part of their matchday identity.

Beşiktaş
A historic club with a distinctive identity and highly organised support. Their stadium's Bosphorus setting is among the most striking in football.

Trabzonspor
Representing Trabzon on the Black Sea, the club has an intensely loyal following. By Süper Lig titles, Trabzonspor are the most successful club outside Istanbul.

These four clubs are central to title-race discussions, attract prominent overseas players and command much of the country's football coverage, although their results and competitiveness vary by season.

4️⃣ Following the League from Abroad

Television
Broadcast rights vary by country and season, often involving subscription sports packages. Check with the authorised broadcaster in your country for the current campaign.

Digital streaming
Some rights holders offer coverage through streaming platforms or apps, in Türkiye or overseas. Availability depends on territorial rights and the service's terms.

Scores and news
International results websites, apps such as Sofascore and FotMob, and official club social media accounts are useful for keeping up with fixtures, results and announcements.

5️⃣ Attending a Match in Türkiye

1. Buy through the authorised route
Most clubs use electronic ticketing, with sales through official websites or authorised sports ticket apps. Plan ahead for major fixtures, especially Istanbul derbies; advance sale phases may prioritise specified supporter groups.

2. Understand supporter registration and e-ticketing
Passolig is the familiar historical name; the current arrangement may be branded Passo Taraftar or use another club-approved system. Identity-linked registration can be required before buying or using a ticket.

Practical guidance reviewed in October 2026: obtaining a supporter card or account is not necessarily a single payment that covers all future attendance. An applicable annual e-ticket usage fee and the separate match-ticket price may both be payable. Follow the current club and platform instructions for your nationality and chosen fixture.

3. Plan the journey
Use suitable metro, tram or Metrobüs services where practical to avoid heavy traffic. Arrive early, particularly for a major game, allowing time for checks and finding the correct entrance.

4. Follow stadium rules
Sharp objects, fireworks and certain banners are prohibited or restricted. Check the match notice for the full list and follow police and steward instructions.

6️⃣ Türkiye's Best-Known Derbies

• Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe: the country's most prominent club rivalry, often an especially tense and closely watched occasion.
• Fenerbahçe–Beşiktaş.
• Galatasaray–Beşiktaş.

These fixtures can fill the ground and are frequently subject to enhanced security or special arrangements for visiting supporters. Check the particular match's sale and admission rules rather than assuming that away tickets will be available.

7️⃣ Practical Tips for Visitors

Choose a match in a city already included in your trip, such as Istanbul, Trabzon or Antalya.
Book before travelling where possible, especially for a major fixture.
Check the confirmed kick-off time: many matches are played in the evening, but daytime games and schedule changes are also possible.
