Karagöl lake in Şavşat.
Şavşat is a mountainous inland district of Artvin, bringing together lakes, forests, pastures and villages with timber houses. Its rural character emerges in homes scattered across the slopes and villages closely tied to the land, while Satlel Castle adds a historical dimension to the scenery.
Şavşat’s Karagöl lies within Karagöl–Sahara National Park, surrounded by dense woodland framing the water. Sahara is associated with upland pastures that complement the forest landscape. This lake is distinct from Borçka’s Karagöl: each occupies its own basin and geographical setting within Artvin province.
Parts of rural Şavşat have timber houses scattered among meadows, gardens and forests. Their construction reflects the need for living space, storage and adaptation to the seasons. Balconies, roofs and outbuildings show how architecture draws on available materials. These are working villages, where the houses form the setting for agriculture, livestock farming and everyday life.

Satlel Castle, also known as Şavşat Castle, is one of the district’s historic landmarks. Its elevated position and surviving walls reveal its role in defence and surveillance of the surrounding area. The fortress bears witness to successive periods of settlement and control along these mountain routes, while the rural landscape around it helps explain the site’s geographical importance.
Pastures and forests underpin a rural economy and a heritage shaped by the seasons. Summer brings open green spaces, autumn transforms the colours, and winter alters conditions in villages and the uplands. Şavşat’s identity combines nature, local architecture and traditions of agricultural life, with a clear distinction between the district centre and its dispersed villages.
Check the condition of sites and routes before visiting, particularly in rain, fog or upland areas. Access to some buildings and facilities varies with the season and maintenance work. Respect the privacy of homes and villages, follow available paths, and help protect historic sites and the surrounding environment.
