Samsun: Sea Air, History and the Landscapes of the Black Sea
Samsun brings together sea air, green inland hills and an important historical legacy. This lively northern city is a useful gateway to the Black Sea coast and a rewarding base for exploring its varied surroundings.

🌍 Geographical setting
Samsun stands on Türkiye's northern coast, facing the Black Sea. Green hills rise inland, and the wider province combines coastline, plains, lakes and uplands. Its position makes it an important link between the eastern and western Black Sea regions.

🏛️ A brief history
Settlement in the Samsun region stretches back thousands of years. Its wider historical story includes Hittite and Phrygian influences, ancient Greek communities, Roman rule and the Ottoman period. The arrival of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on 19 May 1919 marks a pivotal moment in the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence and gives the city particular national significance.

🌿 Nature around Samsun
Long sandy beaches, wooded coastal and inland landscapes, rivers such as the Yeşilırmak, and Lake Lâdik offer varied scenery. Valleys and hills provide further places to enjoy quieter surroundings, photography and views towards the sea. Many of these outings are in the wider province rather than the city centre.

🎡 Places to visit
  • Atakum seafront: an extensive coastal promenade with cafés, beaches and space for walking and exercise.
  • Panorama Samsun: a museum and digital presentation venue exploring Turkish history and the National Struggle, including the events associated with 1919.
  • Amisos cable car: a short journey from Batıpark towards Amisos Hill, with views over the city and sea. Check the operator's current service information before travelling.
  • Amisos Hill: an archaeological area associated with ancient tombs and the history of the city.
  • Lake Lâdik: an inland lake in the province, valued for its landscape and natural setting.
  • Ayvacık: a district of waterways, wooded slopes, suspension bridges and attractive viewpoints.

🍽️ Eating in Samsun
Look for local köfte, freshly prepared fish sandwiches, hamsi or anchovies served in different ways, Samsun-style simit and savoury pastries, including seafood pastries where offered. The province's Bafra, Çarşamba and Terme pide traditions are also well worth exploring.

🚆 Getting around
  • Samsun Çarşamba Airport provides the main air gateway.
  • The modern tram links important parts of the urban coastal corridor; buses and other local services extend beyond it.
  • Samsun has a major port and extensive road connections.

🏨 Areas to consider for accommodation
  • Atakum: a convenient choice for the seafront and visitor facilities.
  • İlkadım: useful for central sights and the city's historic core.
  • Tekkeköy: an alternative on the eastern side of the urban area; compare each property's location and transport links for a family stay.

🎯 Why visit?
Samsun combines sea and hills, natural scenery and modern city life, and history and museums. It can suit a range of budgets, although prices vary by season and property. The coast has a relatively temperate climate, with rain and cooler weather still possible throughout the year. Its variety makes it a city many visitors enjoy returning to.
