The Preparatory Year: Hazırlık

A preparatory language year can provide the foundation you need for university study. If you already meet the required standard, an accepted exemption route may let you begin your degree sooner. The right approach depends on your programme and the university's rules.

1. What is Hazırlık?
Hazırlık is language preparation before degree classes. Turkish-taught programmes may require academic Turkish; English-taught programmes may require academic English. Some preparatory programmes are compulsory and others optional. Check which arrangement applies to your course.

2. When is it required?
Preparatory study may be required if you do not provide accepted proficiency evidence or do not reach the university's passing standard. The university may use placement and proficiency examinations for different purposes: a placement test assigns a class level, while an exemption or proficiency test determines whether you can begin degree study.

Do not assume the same rules apply to every Turkish or English programme. Admission, language exemption and registration can have separate conditions.

3. When might you be exempt?
Common routes include passing the university's proficiency exam, submitting a recognised language certificate or meeting a specifically published exemption based on previous education. A statement that you speak the language well is usually not enough.

4. The main exemption routes

The university's examination: register by its deadline, often around the start of study. Passing at the required level may allow immediate entry to degree classes.
Accepted external evidence: English programmes may accept particular TOEFL versions or other tests; IELTS is accepted only where the university says so. Turkish programmes specify accepted certificates or examinations, which may include particular TÖMER certificates or TYS.
Previous education: some institutions accept defined periods or qualifications taught in the programme's language. A general medium-of-instruction letter is not a universal exemption.

Check score thresholds, test format, validity, issuer and submission rules. METU, for example, does not accept IELTS tests taken on or after 24 December 2022. This is an institution-specific example, not a rule to apply automatically elsewhere.

Türkiye Scholarships can impose a separate Turkish language year on awardees without accepted C1 proficiency, even when the degree itself is in English. An English preparation exemption does not cancel that scholarship condition.

5. When can the year be valuable?
It can help if you need a stronger foundation for reading, research, presentations and specialised vocabulary. Medicine, engineering, law and business all demand more than conversational fluency. Turkish preparation can also make everyday life and future work in Türkiye easier.

If your academic language is already strong, check the exemption options before paying for an unnecessary additional year. However, graduating quickly should not take priority over being ready for the degree.

6. What to ask about the programme

What levels does it teach, and what level must you reach?
How are tests, coursework, projects and attendance assessed?
What is the attendance requirement?
How many exam or resit opportunities are available?
What are the consequences of failing, and what is the maximum permitted period?

Attendance rules can prevent you from passing or taking an exam even when your language skills are strong. Read the current regulations rather than relying on other students' experience.

7. Mistakes that can cost time

Missing the exemption examination or postponing preparation.
Relying on an unrecognised language certificate.
Assuming a programme is fully in English because some modules use English.
Ignoring compulsory attendance or assessment requirements.

8. Prepare for a possible exemption
Start before the examination deadline, using official sample papers where available. Prioritise academic reading, subject vocabulary, clear writing and the grammar needed for accurate communication. Practise listening and speaking if the test includes them. General language apps can supplement this work, but they rarely cover every academic task.

Your starting level determines the time you need. No four-week plan can guarantee an exemption.

Does Hazırlık usually add to the degree duration?
Yes, it generally takes place before the normal degree curriculum. Confirm the formal duration, fees and scholarship coverage for your programme.

Can I take degree modules during preparation?
Only if the university expressly allows it for your circumstances. Do not assume one or two modules are available as a general entitlement.

Will the preparatory year help my career?
It can, if it develops usable academic and professional language skills. Attendance alone does not guarantee those skills.

Decide using the published rules
Identify your university and teaching language, then check the exemption routes and deadlines. If you need preparation, use the year actively; if you qualify for an exemption, submit the correct evidence on time.
