Entry Bans and Restriction Codes in Türkiye in 2026: Checks, Applications and Appeals
An entry ban (Türkiye’ye Giriş Yasağı) is an administrative decision preventing admission for a period or until a specified legal impediment is removed. It may relate to overstay, removal, unpaid fines/costs or public order, security or health. A related entry in the migration system may appear as a restriction code (Tahdit Kodu).

A ban and a code are not the same thing
For a ban, establish the issuing authority, ground, start date, duration and remedy. A code may record an overstay, removal, ban, debt, travel-document problem, security issue or need for additional border checks. Its legal effect depends on the underlying decision; it is not necessarily a permanent ban. Do not rely on internet code lists as a complete official explanation. Request the actual decision and individual records through the proper channel.
Legal basis and duration
Law No. 6458 governs entry bans, including relevant public order, security, health, overstay and removal situations. The ordinary statutory maximum is five years; a serious continuing public order or security threat can justify an additional period of up to ten years under the law. Overstay outcomes depend on duration, departure circumstances, detection, payment, compliance and other restrictions.
Published overstay framework
For voluntary departure before detection with the required fine paid, the published bands from three months of overstay are: three–six months → one-month ban; six months–one year → three months; one–two years → one year; two–three years → two years; more than three years → five years. The less-than-three-month category can avoid an overstay ban where all its official conditions are met.Other specified categories, including non-payment, failure to leave as directed, relevant refusal/cancellation cases and escorted removal, attract different bans of three months to five years. See the official provincial copy of the entry-ban explanation. This is not a substitute for checking the category and dates in the actual case.
Payment does not automatically lift a ban
Separate the overstay fine, entry ban, restriction code, removal costs and other public debts. A ban may expire while unpaid liabilities still prevent admission. Paying the fine alone does not cancel every restriction, and unpaid state-funded removal costs can remain a separate impediment.
Notice and documents at the border
Decisions may be notified on departure, attempted entry, through a governorate inside Türkiye or via the representative/lawyer as applicable. The notice should explain the legal effects and available remedy. If entry is refused, request the entry-refusal and any ban decision, written grounds, relevant debt/payment document and any document showing the restriction reference.
How to check your position
There is no general public service displaying every security and administrative code in detail. Review the decision, contact the competent migration office, use YİMER for general information, make a formal request through a lawyer/representative or ask the Turkish mission when applying for a visa. Review any linked removal or court file. YİMER is reached on 157 in Türkiye or +90 312 157 11 22 from abroad.
Seeking assistance with an application
Entry can be refused without a separate ban
Other grounds include missing or invalid travel documents, or missing or invalid visa/residence/work documents where required for the traveller’s status and no exemption applies, forged or fraudulently obtained documents, insufficient passport validity, an inadequately justified visit, inadequate funds, required insurance missing, unpaid liabilities or public order/security/health grounds. The person should receive information on the measure and remedies and may be kept in the designated border area while processing is completed.
A specially annotated visa
A person with a ban, including someone whose nationality is normally visa-exempt, can ask the Turkish mission about an Özel Meşruhatlı Vize for an appropriate specific purpose. Relevant purposes may include treatment, study, employment, family reasons, court proceedings or another accepted humanitarian/official need. Applying does not guarantee approval or itself delete a code. The mission and competent authorities determine the available route.
An administrative request
Where appropriate, identify the person, nationality, passport and previous foreign identity number, entry/departure/removal dates, challenged decision/code and reasons for lifting it. Attach payment proof and relevant family, medical, education or other evidence, contact details and representation authority. Further evidence may be requested; filing the request is not approval.
Judicial review
An entry ban or restriction producing legal effects may be challenged in the competent administrative court. The general annulment limit is 60 days from service unless a special rule or different legal situation applies. Identify the decision and authority and prove service/knowledge dates. An administrative request can affect calculation only under the applicable procedural rules; it is not safe to assume every enquiry suspends time. The claim does not automatically suspend the ban or authorise entry. A stay of execution can be requested separately where its conditions are met. Have the actual decision reviewed promptly rather than waiting until the final day.

Evidence to prepare
Collect the entry/refusal/removal decisions, current and old passports and stamps, fine/removal-cost receipts, previous cards, family documents, medical reports, university acceptance or contract, service evidence, official correspondence and material disproving the stated ground.
Avoid preventable mistakes
Check the restriction before buying travel; distinguish debts from bans; avoid agents promising instant code deletion; disclose previous removal accurately in applications; keep receipts; observe court deadlines; and remember that a court claim or specially annotated visa application does not automatically lift the ban. Obtain the decision, identify its legal basis and seek the appropriate documented administrative or court remedy.
