Shopping in old Mardin is part of exploring its lanes, stone buildings and arcades. Keep your bazaar visit flexible: browse crafts and gifts first, then compare what catches your eye, taking a short break when the steps become tiring. This guide covers a bazaar district, rather than a modern mall with a single entrance and fixed floors.
An archival photograph of Mardin’s old bazaar district, September 2005; it is not attributed to a specific arcade.
Start at Revaklı Çarşı, also known as Sipahiler Çarşısı or Tellallar Çarşısı. It stands near Hasan Ayyar Çarşısı in Artuklu, on İkinci Cadde east of the Great Mosque. Its layout features arcades with shops behind them.
Save the Turkish name rather than relying solely on “Mardin bazaar”, then plan a route from your hotel. Walking down into the lanes may be easy while the climb back is tiring, so decide on your return point before carrying purchases.
If you like an item described as silver or telkâri filigree, ask about the material, fineness, workmanship and place of manufacture. Check the clasp, links and surface, and try the size before paying. The city’s name or decorative style does not establish what an item is made from.
For other gifts, compare weight, fragility and suitability for the recipient. A small item with documented ingredients or materials may be easier to travel with than a large box chosen mainly for its packaging.

| Purchase | What to check | Before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery or accessories | Material, fineness and craftsmanship | Itemised receipt for valuable purchases |
| Food products | Ingredients and packing date | Secure packaging suitable for travel |
| Decorative items and crafts | Fragility and weight | Separate protection inside your luggage |
Wear comfortable shoes, bring a little water and leave large bags at your accommodation. With a pushchair or someone who finds walking difficult, ask your hotel or a local guide about a route with fewer steps and a suitable vehicle meeting point.
Do not try to cover every lane in one outing. Choose a shopping passage, then pause for photographs or a rest. This leaves you energy to compare items rather than buying the first thing you see when tired.

Browse several shops before bargaining, and compare the price of the same item in the same size. Ask permission before photographing a craftsperson or goods inside a shop, and save the location if you want to return.
Check a particular shop’s hours directly when seeking something specific. The old city’s bazaars offer stone arcades and gifts, while MovaPark offers modern shopping near the airport in Kızıltepe. Planning the two separately makes the distances easier to understand.
