Kocaeli is building two separate metro systems that are often confused:
- Körfezray: The Körfez–Derince–İzmit–Kartepe corridor.
- Gebze OSB–Darıca Sahil: Gebze, Darıca and the organised industrial area in the province’s west.
Körfezray
Körfezray is a major urban transport investment along the İzmit corridor, running broadly east–west through residential and industrial areas around the Gulf of İzmit. The main phase links locations including:
- Tüpraş–Petkim.
- 95 Evler.
- Derince.
- Derince Hospital.
- Derince Millet Bahçesi.
- Kuruçeşme.
- Seka Hospital.
- Seka Park.
- Central İzmit.
- The intercity bus terminal.
- Yahya Kaptan.
- Fındıklı and Mobesko.
- Kartepe and Köseköy.
- İzmit East.
Construction progress
Work includes station sites, tunnels, utility diversions and roads. In May 2026, the municipality announced that all six tunnel-boring machines were operating; see the Körfezray progress update.Main excavation directions include:
- From Seka Hospital towards Derince.
- From Seka Hospital towards the bus terminal.
- From Derince Millet Bahçesi towards Tüpraş–Petkim.
When will Körfezray open?
No confirmed opening date for the whole passenger line had been announced by 30 August 2026. A previous ministry schedule targeted some tunnel-boring sections for 2027 and broader excavation completion for 2028; see the published ministry project details.Tunnel completion is followed by track, power and signalling; ventilation, fire protection and station systems; then train, evacuation and safety tests. Passenger service begins only after operational approval. Accordingly, 2028 should not be presented as a guaranteed opening date: it relates primarily to construction and excavation milestones.
Gebze–Darıca Metro
The 15.4 km Gebze OSB–Darıca Sahil line has 11 stations. It runs from Gebze Organised Industrial Zone through residential and commercial areas to Darıca’s coast. It serves western Kocaeli’s workers and residents, in an area closely linked economically with Istanbul. Features include:
- A double-track underground route.
- Automated driverless trains.
- A planned Marmaray interchange at Gebze station.
- Access to the organised industrial zone.
- Links between inland neighbourhoods and the Darıca coast.
- A depot and maintenance site near the industrial area.
Is Gebze–Darıca open?
At the 30 August 2026 update, the project remained among the Infrastructure Investments Directorate’s ongoing schemes, without confirmation of regular commercial passenger service. The ministry had targeted completion and opening in the second half of 2026. A target is different from an actual service opening. Before using the route, check an announcement confirming:
- The passenger-service start date.
- Which stations are open.
- Operating hours.
- Fares and payment methods.
- The status of the Marmaray interchange.
- Completion of trial operation.
Why do passenger estimates differ?
Official sources agree on the core line length and station count but publish different passenger estimates. Some concern expected early demand; others describe future design capacity.Figures such as 193,000 or 330,000 passengers a day are not observed ridership before opening. Actual use can only be measured after services begin and schedules settle.
Çayırova–Gebze Courthouse extension
A planned extension of approximately 5.7 km and three stations would connect Çayırova with the Gebze Courthouse area and the wider network. It is not an open part of the main line and should not appear as an available travel option before a separate operating announcement.
The practical difference
Körfezray:- An east–west corridor.
- Serves Körfez, Derince, İzmit and Kartepe.
- Still in tunnel and station construction.
- A more distant opening horizon.
- A north–south corridor in western Kocaeli.
- Links the industrial zone with Darıca’s coast.
- More advanced in train and systems work.
- Targeted to open before Körfezray, with commercial operation still unconfirmed at the stated date.
What was already operating?
Existing options include:- Marmaray at Gebze.
- Suburban and mainline trains, depending on station and service.
- Akçaray tram services around İzmit.
- Municipal and private buses.
- Industrial-area staff transport.
- Road travel via D100, TEM and the northern motorway.
Potential effects on housing and work
Gebze–Darıca could reduce reliance on buses and cars between homes and the industrial zone, including for shift workers. Körfezray aims to connect Derince, İzmit and Kartepe with a high-capacity corridor.Possible effects include greater housing demand near stations, more local commerce, changed bus routes and pressure on interchange parking. Congestion may persist if the journey between homes and stations remains difficult.
Before buying or renting near a “metro”
Check:- Which line the advertisement means.
- Whether the station is being built or is only proposed.
- Actual walking distance.
- Barriers or major roads between the property and station.
- The phase in which that station is intended to open.
- Building and earthquake safety.
- Noise and diversions during construction.
Conclusion
Kocaeli is building Gebze–Darıca in the west and Körfezray along the gulf and İzmit corridor. The first was more advanced but had no confirmed regular passenger opening by 30 August 2026. The second had six active boring machines and further construction, fitting-out and testing ahead. A project or target date becomes an available railway only when commercial services are officially announced and stations open to passengers.- Kocaeli: Industry, Coastal Views and Nature near Istanbul
