🗣️ Language Tests for Study in Türkiye 2026

Language requirements are easy to overlook until they delay enrolment or lead to a preparatory year. This guide explains Turkish and English proficiency evidence, how university exemption exams work and how to choose a suitable test.

1. First check the programme's teaching language
Is your course taught in Turkish, English or a combination of languages? The programme's published rules determine what you must prove. Your personal preference for a language does not change those requirements.

2. Turkish proficiency and TÖMER
Turkish-taught programmes commonly require evidence of academic Turkish before you begin degree classes. An accepted certificate or university proficiency exam may allow exemption from language preparation.

TÖMER is a language teaching centre designation, not one universal national examination. Centres and universities issue different certificates, and your university decides which it accepts. Levels commonly encountered are A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1; check the required level and accepted issuer for your exact programme rather than assuming B2 is sufficient.

Ankara University TÖMER offers courses up to C1. Yunus Emre Institute's Turkish Proficiency Exam, TYS, awards B2 or C1 certificates. A certificate's level alone does not guarantee admission or exemption at every university. Medicine and law, for example, also demand strong command of specialised vocabulary.

3. English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS and university tests
An English-taught programme may require accepted proficiency evidence for admission, registration or exemption from English preparation. Universities differ on the examination, version, minimum score, test venue, result validity and submission deadline.

TOEFL and IELTS are not automatically interchangeable. Some universities accept particular versions of TOEFL or other exams and do not accept IELTS. For example, METU states that IELTS results from tests taken on or after 24 December 2022 are not accepted. Always use the current policy for your own programme.

4. Can I qualify without an external certificate?
Some universities run their own proficiency exam. Passing at the required level may allow you to start degree classes; if you do not meet the standard, preparatory study may be required. Check whether the exam is available to your applicant category and when it takes place.

Prepare seriously even if you plan to take the university's test. General conversation skills do not necessarily prepare you for academic reading, listening and writing.

5. Choose the right route
  • For a Turkish-taught programme, check the accepted Turkish certificates and internal exam options.
  • For an English-taught programme, choose only an English test or exemption route the university recognises.
  • Learning everyday Turkish remains useful even when your degree is in English.
  • If you plan further study or work abroad, consider future requirements too, without overlooking the immediate university rules.
Do not book a test simply because it is familiar or convenient. Confirm acceptance first.

6. A six-week preparation framework
This is a revision framework for an appropriate starting level, not a promise of reaching academic proficiency from zero in six weeks.

Turkish
  • Weeks 1–2: review grammar and everyday and academic vocabulary.
  • Weeks 3–4: practise reading, listening and short written responses.
  • Week 5: concentrate on speaking and sample tasks.
  • Week 6: complete timed practice papers and review recurring errors.
English
  • Weeks 1–2: assess your level and address the main gaps.
  • Weeks 3–4: practise writing and reading tasks for the accepted examination.
  • Week 5: focus on listening and speaking.
  • Week 6: complete full practice tests and refine your timing.
Use the current format of the examination you have chosen.

7. Common mistakes that delay degree study
  • Submitting a certificate the university does not recognise.
  • Choosing an unsuitable test version, such as IELTS General Training when the institution requires IELTS Academic.
  • Missing the exemption exam or document deadline.
  • Relying on spoken fluency while neglecting academic reading and writing.

8. Frequently asked questions
Do I need Turkish for an English-taught degree?
It may not be required for ordinary academic admission, but programme-specific or clinical requirements can differ. Türkiye Scholarships has a separate rule: awardees without accepted C1 Turkish proficiency must normally complete its one-year Turkish course, including those on English-taught degrees. Turkish is also valuable in daily life.

Is a TÖMER certificate better than the university exam?
Neither is automatically better. Use an option that your university accepts, considering cost, timing and your preparation.

Can a high IELTS score exempt me from Turkish preparation?
No. English proficiency does not establish Turkish proficiency. Follow the university's Turkish certificate or exemption exam rules.

Before booking
Find the university, programme, teaching language and current proficiency policy. Confirm the accepted test, level, deadline and any restrictions in writing if the published information is unclear.
