İzmir is Türkiye's third-largest city, combining opportunities for study and everyday living with an Aegean setting. Its pace differs from İstanbul's, although congestion varies across the city.
• Konak / Alsancak: Central services and many walkable streets.
• Karşıyaka: Waterfront life and family amenities, varying by neighbourhood.
• Bornova: Universities, students and shopping centres.
• Buca: Some more affordable homes, with busy areas and streets.
• Balçova / Narlıdere: Residential options and access to hospitals and other services.
• Çiğli: Practical choices for some families and workers.
• Metro and trams: Useful for daily journeys along their routes.
• İZBAN: Suburban rail serving longer urban and regional journeys, including the airport.
• Buses and ferries: Further connections, with ferries linking different shores of the bay.
The transport card is called İzmirim Kart. It is used on participating metro, tram, bus, ferry and suburban rail services. Check the current top-up options, fares and transfer rules.
1) Is access to your university or workplace more important than a waterfront address?
2) Would you prefer quiet streets or a busier setting?
3) Which homes fit your total budget?
A lower rent can be offset by a difficult commute, so test the route before deciding.
• Assess the shops and services within practical reach of the home.
• Photograph meter readings on the day you receive the keys.
• Confirm internet availability in the building before signing.
Public and private providers are available. Locate a suitable nearby hospital and learn how to find the pharmacy on duty, as well as checking insurance coverage.
Choose a home with useful transport, nearby services and a setting suited to your routine.
