Hotels or Serviced Apartments in Türkiye: Space, Services and Costs Compared
Should you book a hotel or a serviced apartment? Which offers better value for a family, and which is more convenient in Istanbul or the Black Sea region?
This practical guide compares:
A conventional hotel.
An aparthotel, serviced apartment or holiday apartment.
Benefits and
drawbacks of each option.
Family needs.
The full cost.
When to choose one type, or combine both during a trip.
The basic difference
A conventional hotel
Typically offers:- Rooms or suites in a hotel building.
- An organised reception and lobby, housekeeping and breakfast options; some also have a restaurant, sauna or gym. Inclusions and cleaning frequency depend on the property and rate.
- Often less space than an apartment, but more services close at hand.
An aparthotel or holiday apartment
Typically offers:- A self-contained unit with one or more bedrooms, a sitting area and a kitchen or kitchenette. Layouts vary, including studios.
- An option for longer stays, families and groups.
- Services that may be more limited, such as no included breakfast or no daily housekeeping.
Comparing the main trade-offs
Budget and total cost
Hotel: often worth comparing for one or two people. A higher nightly figure may include breakfast or services that cost extra elsewhere.
Apartment: can cost less than several hotel rooms for a larger family or group. An equipped kitchen may also reduce breakfast and snack costs, allowing for groceries and any cleaning or service fees.
Space and comfort
Hotel: an ordinary room may be compact and perfectly adequate for sleeping, but less comfortable for long periods indoors. Suites can offer more space.
Apartment: separate bedrooms, a sitting room and sometimes a balcony can give children and adults more room. This can be useful for stays of a week or longer.
Services and day-to-day convenience
Hotel:
Prepared breakfast, often a buffet, where offered and included or purchased.
Regular housekeeping, commonly daily in full-service properties.
Reception assistance with taxis, excursions and requests.
More formal access and support arrangements at many hotels; assess the actual security measures rather than assuming the accommodation type guarantees safety.
Apartment:- Breakfast may be unavailable or charged separately.
- Cleaning may take place every few days, rather than daily.
- Some holiday flats have no 24-hour reception, with support provided by an owner or small office.
Cooking and food flexibility
Hotel: most standard rooms have no kitchen, leaving you reliant on restaurants or room service where available.
Apartment: a kitchen or kitchenette may contain a microwave, hob and fridge. Confirm the equipment. It can help families with children or particular dietary needs prepare suitable meals and save on breakfasts and snacks.
Privacy and keeping the family together
Hotel: separate bookings may be allocated apart unless internally connecting rooms have been confirmed. This matters when children occupy another room.
Apartment: everyone can share one unit, with a common sitting area and a more homelike feel. Confirm that there are enough proper beds and bedrooms; an apartment label does not promise a bedroom per person.
Which option suits the trip?
Four to six days in Istanbul
Alone or with one companion: compare a central hotel in Taksim, Sultanahmet or Şişli if convenient services are your priority.
Four to six family members: compare a serviced apartment near useful metro or tram routes with a family hotel suite. Suites may cost more, but check equivalent capacity and services.
Trabzon, Uzungöl, Rize and Ordu
- Trabzon: a central hotel can suit organised excursions; an apartment may suit families with a car who want more space.
- Uzungöl and Ayder: cabins and apartments can offer a distinctive natural setting, although support and services may be more limited than in a city hotel. Check the individual property.
A honeymoon
- A couple who value service, prepared meals and a view may prefer a hotel.
- A wooden cabin or an apartment with a private sea or mountain outlook may suit a couple seeking that particular experience.
Two weeks or longer
An apartment may make laundry easier, reduce food costs through cooking and provide space to sit, work or study. Confirm a washing machine or laundry access and an equipped kitchen before relying on those advantages.
Apartment booking pitfalls
An unreliable booking source or insufficient guest feedback.
An inconvenient location, far from transport or uphill along a difficult walking route.
Unread stay rules: is cleaning included, is a security deposit required, and is there a lift? These details matter especially for families and older travellers.
Attractive photographs that do not reflect the present unit. Read recent reviews from Arab and other guests, and check the exact apartment being offered.
Combining hotels and apartments
One possible approach is:
Istanbul: spend the first two or three nights in a central hotel while finding your bearings, then move to a suitably located apartment for the remaining days.
The Black Sea region: choose a hotel or apartment in Trabzon according to group size, then a cabin or apartment in Uzungöl or Ayder for a different natural setting.
Starting points for your choice
One or two travellers on a short visit: compare central hotels.
Four to six family members with children who want to cook: compare apartments near useful metro or tram services.
Honeymooners prioritising service and luxury: compare hotels with a confirmed Bosphorus, sea or mountain view.
A nature-focused stay in Uzungöl or Ayder: compare cabins and serviced apartments with practical access.
Two weeks or more: compare serviced or fully equipped apartments, including all services and charges.
