♨️ Kangal: springs, countryside and renowned livestock guardians

Kangal brings together fish-inhabited thermal springs, a tradition of breeding livestock guardian dogs and rural landscapes in southern Sivas province. Spend a day exploring its sights, then allow a separate day for Gürün, Gökpınar Lake and Şuğul Canyon.

For a visit to the springs in 2026, check available services before leaving, as a redevelopment project has been announced.

🏗️ 2026 update: redevelopment of the springs

On 3 April 2026, Sivas Governorate announced a redevelopment project for Kangal Balıklı Göl Tabiat Parkı, targeting the opening of new facilities in summer 2027.

The plan includes accommodation, pools, pedestrian areas and visitor services, with vehicles moved to the site's outer edges. The announcement also envisaged adapting some existing buildings and pools for day visitors during summer 2026.

These are dates and services set out in a development plan. Ask directly which pools are operating, the admission times and whether overnight accommodation is available on your dates, especially when consulting older advertisements or photographs.

🐟 Thermal springs and fish

Kangal Balıklı Kaplıca is known for warm water inhabited by small fish. The Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate gives the water temperature as approximately 36–37°C.

The springs and their valley setting make this one of Kangal's best-known visitor destinations. Decide whether you want to see the site or use the pools, then ask what arrangements are available for your preferred visit.

Use the facility's full Turkish name when making enquiries. Confirm what admission covers and which services are available during redevelopment.

🐕 Learning about Kangal dogs

The area's name is associated with Kangal Köpeği, a breed known for guarding and protecting flocks. The Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate lists Kangal Köpeği Araştırma Merkezi, the Kangal Dog Research Centre, among places to visit.

A visit introduces rural life and animal husbandry in Anatolia. Ask beforehand whether visitors are being received and when tours take place. Approach or photograph the dogs with staff present and according to their instructions.

Families can combine the centre with a short walk around Kangal, arranging the day around the children's ages and journey length.

🏛️ An additional historic stop

If time permits, add Alacahan Kervansarayı and its neighbouring mosque. Official sources also list the house of the folk poet Âşık Ruhsatî in Deliktaş village among local sights.

Choose an extra stop that suits your route and interests, leaving time for breaks and photography.

💎 Gökpınar Lake in Gürün

Gökpınar Gölü lies approximately 10 kilometres from central Gürün and is a separate destination within Sivas province.

It is known for clear blue and turquoise water fed by continuously flowing springs. Türkiye's Culture Portal gives a depth of 10–15 metres and records the area's designation as a nature park in July 2025.

Allow time to walk and photograph from permitted points, and check locally which activities are available that day. The lake can be the main stop on a nature outing around Gürün.

🌿 Şuğul Canyon

Combine the lake with Şuğul Kanyonu in Gürün, where a river flows between high rock walls, with views of water, vegetation and rock formations.

A walk and photography visit depend on the path's condition and the weather. Use sections prepared for visitors and leave enough time to return before dark.

🗓️ A suggested two-day itinerary

• Day one: Kangal and the dog research centre, then the springs subject to current operation; add Alacahan if time permits.
• Day two: Gürün, Gökpınar Lake and Şuğul Canyon.

With only one day, choose Kangal or Gürün according to your interests and calculate driving time from your accommodation before fixing the programme.

🚗 Transport and accommodation

Kangal is on the Sivas–Malatya corridor, with roads towards Gürün, Divriği and Ulaş. A car gives flexibility for rural sites. If using public transport, check both the connection from town to each attraction and the return.

Choose accommodation to suit the next day's route and confirm food, parking and other services you need. For the springs in particular, request up-to-date confirmation of the facilities included in a booking.
