Geothermal energy in Aydın and Denizli: electricity, heat and local development

Aydın and Denizli are associated with hot water deep underground. This resource supplies power stations and activities that use heat directly. In 2026, the discussion also concerns improving plant efficiency, managing water and meeting local farming and tourism needs.

The Kızıldere area, spanning Denizli and Aydın, provides a clear example, with established stations and developments combining geothermal and solar generation.

How does underground heat become electricity?

Wells bring hot fluids to the surface. Plants use their heat in an electricity-generating cycle suited to the resource's characteristics. Heat can also serve direct uses such as space heating and greenhouses where technical conditions and the distance to users make this feasible.

Electrical generating capacity and useful heating capacity are different measures. Read project figures with their energy type and units in mind.

A documented development in June 2026

Zorlu Enerji's report for the first half of 2026 lists Kızıldere II in Sarayköy at 80 MWe. Its integrated 8.51 MWp solar installation began commercial electricity sales following official Ministry acceptance on 19 June 2026.

The same report lists Kızıldere III at 165 MWe, with its integrated solar project still under development during the reporting period. The figures distinguish an addition already operating from a project still being developed; the solar peak rating should not simply be added to licensed electrical output.

Farming: using heat close to its source

Possible applications include greenhouse heating and supplying heat to suitable agricultural processes. Success depends on the resource's temperature and reliability, the distance to the farm, and the cost of pipes, operation and maintenance.

The design must separate geothermal fluids from the agricultural heating circuit. Extracting heat is different from using those fluids for irrigation. Crop choice and facility size also require a technical and financial assessment specific to the site.

Thermal resorts: tourism and resource management

The spring and resort experience depends on water temperature, facility quality, accommodation and bathing services. A thermal stay can be combined with Pamukkale and Hierapolis. Check which hotel facilities are operating, their opening hours and what your booking includes.

Such businesses need to balance water and energy use with the resource's capacity, especially at busy times. Compare the relaxation experience and available services when choosing accommodation.

Water and environmental effects

Zorlu Enerji reports using reverse osmosis at Kızıldere III to recover water derived from the geothermal process for operational needs, reducing reliance on mains water. This is the operator's account of water management at a particular facility.

Questions for any project include fluid reinjection, protection of water and soil, emissions measurement and well monitoring. Publishing measurements, residents' complaints and the measures taken in response helps establish actual performance.

What to follow in 2026
  • Actual plant output and commissioned additions, distinguished from planned capacity.
  • Local heat-use projects and their connections to farms and other users.
  • Water consumed and reused, alongside environmental monitoring results.
  • Effects on local services, jobs and quality of life around the facilities.
