The Halkalı–Ispartakule project is a key link between Halkalı station and the Istanbul–Çerkezköy–Kapıkule corridor towards Thrace and the European border.
The transport ministry describes it as a natural westward extension of Marmaray’s reach, with potential suburban services for Ispartakule, Bahçeşehir and areas around Esenyurt.
In the August 2026 overview, the new section had not begun commercial passenger service. Opening depends on construction, testing, signalling and safety approval.
Halkalı–Ispartakule is the easternmost section of the approximately 229 km Halkalı–Kapıkule project. The three main sections are:
- Halkalı–Ispartakule in western Istanbul.
- Ispartakule–Çerkezköy between Istanbul and Tekirdağ.
- Çerkezköy–Kapıkule towards the Bulgarian border.
The Halkalı–Ispartakule section has two roles: suburban travel within western Istanbul, and a route for intercity and freight trains between Istanbul, Thrace and Europe.
The published engineering length is approximately 8.4 km, including:
- A twin-bore tunnel approximately 6.4 km long, excavated by a tunnel-boring machine (TBM).
- Two cut-and-cover tunnels with a combined length of around 634 metres.
- Approximately 1.38 km of open section.
- Two tracks rather than a limited-capacity single line.
- Modern electrification, signalling, communications and control.
- Infrastructure for passenger and freight operations.
Ispartakule lies in western Istanbul near Bahçeşehir and substantial residential areas of Başakşehir, Esenyurt and Avcılar. Potential users include:
- Ispartakule residents.
- Nearby Bahçeşehir neighbourhoods.
- Northern parts of Avcılar.
- Nearby and eastern parts of Esenyurt.
- New housing around the TEM corridor.
- Travellers between western Istanbul and Thrace.
The benefit depends on actual station distance, feeder services and the eventual timetable.
Three separate questions matter:
- Infrastructure connection: the railway reaches Halkalı, which is served by Marmaray.
- Through-running: the source overview does not identify a final timetable confirming which trains, if any, will continue directly over Marmaray and which will require a change at Halkalı.
- Tickets and frequency: fares, daily services, intervals and payment arrangements require the operating announcement.
The 13.5 km Halkalı–Bahçeşehir suburban service began in May 2022, using Marmaray-type trains. It initially offered a small number of morning and evening journeys, with a change at Halkalı. Ispartakule was subsequently added to the service.
The new project is more than an increase in B2 departures. Its modern double-track infrastructure is intended to support suburban, intercity, Thrace-bound and international freight trains at greater capacity.
B2 services may change or be temporarily suspended during connection works. Consult the current TCDD service list rather than relying on old times. The original opening announcement provides the historical context.
Halkalı is developing beyond its role as Marmaray’s western terminus. Connections involve:
- Marmaray B1 through central Istanbul and beneath the Bosphorus.
- Long-distance and international trains.
- The Istanbul–Sofia train and onward Balkan travel.
- M11 towards Istanbul Airport and Gayrettepe.
- The future M1B extension from Kirazlı, after completion.
- The new railway towards Ispartakule, Thrace and Kapıkule.
Reported progress includes completion of the tunnel bores, track and electrical work, signalling and communications, technical approval preparations, and connections at Halkalı and Ispartakule.
In June 2026, the ministry said it was approaching completion of the remaining section and targeting an opening during the year. The source also records the possibility of service moving into 2027. These remain targets rather than a guaranteed date.
The careful description is that construction is advanced, a late-2026 opening was targeted, and the programme may extend into 2027. The ministry’s project update should be checked alongside a formal passenger-service announcement. The 2026 public investment programme also lists the Halkalı–Ispartakule works within a programme extending to 2027.
The wider corridor continues towards Bahçeşehir, Çatalca and Çerkezköy, then Edirne and Kapıkule. The middle section plans to serve Bahçeşehir, Çatalca and Çerkezköy.
The Ispartakule–Çerkezköy project is an electrified, double-track passenger and freight railway.
For the complete Halkalı–Kapıkule corridor, the ministry’s aims include reducing the passenger journey from about four hours to approximately 90 minutes, increasing capacity, improving Thrace services and freight links to Europe, and shifting some goods from road to rail.
The 90-minute target applies to the full Halkalı–Kapıkule project, not the short Halkalı–Ispartakule section alone.
- Less dependence on buses: an alternative to making the entire journey on TEM and E-5 roads.
- Access to Marmaray: onward travel from Halkalı towards Bakırköy, Yenikapı, Sirkeci and the Asian side.
- Airport connections: transfers at Halkalı towards M11.
- Bahçeşehir services: stronger benefits if the final timetable offers more regular departures than the limited B2 service.
- Halkalı’s role: a hub combining urban, intercity, international and airport travel.
- Congestion: potential reductions depend on frequency, capacity and easy station access.
Improved rail access may benefit some developments around Ispartakule and Bahçeşehir. A station announcement alone is insufficient to assess a property. Check:
- The real walking or driving distance to the entrance.
- Feeder-bus availability.
- Daily departures after opening.
- Whether a train change is needed at Halkalı.
- The complete door-to-door journey.
- Whether the station exists or is still planned.
- Whether claimed dates come from the operator or property advertising.
Is the new section open?
It had not begun commercial service in the August 2026 overview. Check current operator announcements before travelling.
Is it a metro?
No. It is railway infrastructure for suburban, intercity and freight services.
Does it reach central Esenyurt?
No. Many residents will need a connection to Ispartakule.
Can I travel to Gebze without changing?
The final through-service pattern must be confirmed by the operating timetable.
Will it run all day?
The source overview does not provide an approved frequency or daily timetable.
Does it connect to Europe?
The full corridor reaches Kapıkule and the Bulgarian border, subject to completion of its sections.
When will it open?
Late 2026 was a target, with the programme potentially extending into 2027; wait for the official service date.
Halkalı–Ispartakule is both a western Istanbul connection and part of a much longer European railway corridor. The most direct local benefits are around Ispartakule and Bahçeşehir; benefits elsewhere depend on station access and feeder services.
Construction progress does not establish the final timetable, fares or a guaranteed opening date. Those need confirmation from the operator.
