These three sites complement one another but offer different experiences. Göreme focuses on churches, paintings and monastic life; Zelve on the remains of a community that lived within the rock; and Paşabağ on its celebrated rock formations. Understanding the difference helps you distribute your time, avoid duplicate tickets and spend the day on places that suit your family's interests. You can combine them in an unhurried day or choose just two with lunch and a rest.

📌 Tickets and operation review: The Ministry of Culture and Tourism pages were checked on 7 October 2026 and again on 9 October. The stated hours and price below reflect those pages. Check your visit date, product and visitor category before paying, particularly for night visits, the Dark Church and museum passes.

1️⃣ 🧭 Understand the sites before planning

Do not confuse Göreme town with Göreme Open-Air Museum: booking a hotel in town does not grant museum admission. Zelve and Paşabağ also have separate entrances and visitor areas even when an official ticket product bears both names. Select the actual entrance on your phone rather than a general Cappadocia pin.

SiteIts characterBest suited to
Göreme Open-Air MuseumRock-cut churches, wall paintings and monastic spacesVisitors interested in art, history and a focused visit
ZelveA rock-cut village and remains of everyday life spread across valleysThose who enjoy walking and understanding how people lived
PaşabağProminent fairy chimneys and formations with multiple capsScenery, photography and a shorter circuit

For a first visit with limited family time, choose Göreme and Paşabağ. If you enjoy walking and rock-cut homes, give Zelve longer and reduce the number of churches. Wall-painting enthusiasts can prioritise Göreme and the Dark Church, then decide on the rest of the day according to their energy.

2️⃣ 🎟️ A clear ticket map

There is an official Göreme admission product, a separate product for the Dark Church within the complex, and one named Zelve–Paşabağlar. When buying individual tickets, do not assume that the church's location within the museum automatically includes it in basic admission. Check the product name on your ticket and the ticket office's explanation before paying.

For Zelve and Paşabağ, the official website offers a product bearing both names. Read its conditions, how to use the entry code at each entrance and its validity period rather than buying identical tickets from two different sellers. The ticket does not transport your family between sites or make the journey between them part of a single visitor area.

Save tickets on your phone with an offline copy, and raise screen brightness when scanning. If you bought a package or museum pass, show it before requesting an additional ticket. For families, match children's ages, visitor nationality and required documents: free admission for a Turkish child under one product does not automatically mean every foreign child enters free.

3️⃣ 💳 Museum passes: the exact name changes coverage

Several cards exist, notably a tourist pass for Cappadocia and the domestic Müzekart. Do not ask about entry using museum card alone. The official electronic MuseumPass Cappadocia page gives a price of €65, validity for three days from first admission, and one entry per participating museum or site.

The official list linked from that product page includes Göreme, Zelve–Paşabağlar and the Dark Church. It is therefore wrong to say that the church is excluded from every pass. The domestic Müzekart rules exclude the Dark Church and require an additional ticket. Read the name on your card, then ask the ticket office about that particular product, especially if bought through an intermediary.

⚠️ Confirmed exception: The MuseumPass Cappadocia page states that MuseumPass products are not valid for night-visit programmes. Buying a pass for daytime visits does not automatically grant night admission, and one entry per site does not mean unlimited re-entry.

Do not buy the pass simply because you will visit three names in this guide: Zelve and Paşabağ appear in a shared product, and individual tickets may cost less for your programme. Add the actual prices for sites you will enter within the pass validity, include exceptions, then compare.

4️⃣ 🕗 Opening hours and when to start

At the checks, Göreme's page showed opening at 08:00 and closing at 17:45 every day. Zelve–Paşabağlar showed 08:00–18:00, with ticket sales ending at 17:15. The difference between site and ticket-office closure matters: arriving ten minutes before the site closes does not ensure that you can buy admission or have adequate sightseeing time.

Start with your priority site early, especially in heat or on busy group-tour days. At Göreme, fit the Dark Church into the order of your visit rather than postponing it until the final minutes. The section's hours and approach may differ, and the main museum's operating limit still belongs in your plan.

Göreme's page also displays a night programme of 18:00–23:00, with ticket sales ending at 22:30. The Ministry has extended night visits at Göreme through 31 October 2026, as confirmed on 13 October. The displayed hours remain subject to confirmation for your chosen date. If interested, confirm current operation, available sections, the required ticket and transport after departure. Do not reproduce your daytime church programme on the assumption that every part opens at night under identical conditions.

5️⃣ 🖼️ Göreme: understand the churches

The museum is a rock-cut site with churches, chapels, dining halls and living spaces associated with monastic life. The official page describes intensive monastic activity from the fourth to the thirteenth century and names churches including St Basil, the Apple Church, St Barbara, the Snake Church, the Sandal Church, the Dark Church and Tokalı. You need not memorise every name to enjoy it, but distinguishing a few examples gives the visit meaning.

Begin with the overall formation and spaces used for living, then choose churches in which to compare geometric decoration with figurative paintings. Stop at one or two images and read the explanation instead of photographing every wall without understanding it. If the religious history is unfamiliar, a guide or available audio interpretation can help, after checking language and cost at the ticket office.

Allow roughly an hour and a half to two hours as a practical suggestion, with longer for detailed interests. Ask about the current route, temporarily closed sections and the best timing for the Dark Church. A list of churches does not prove that all their rooms are accessible without restrictions on your day.

6️⃣ ⛪ The Dark Church: a separate decision within your day

The Dark Church is known for wall paintings whose strong colours survived because little light entered. The Ministry explains that its name relates to a small window in the entrance area and dates the building to the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. It is not a room to hurry through simply because it has an additional entrance: choose it if you want to devote time to art and its details.

When buying individual tickets, ask about purchasing its additional admission alongside the museum ticket and where to scan it. With MuseumPass Cappadocia, check the listed coverage before buying a second ticket. With Müzekart, the card rules exclude it; a discount for cardholders does not mean free entry.

Follow photography, capacity and quietness instructions inside the church, and do not touch paintings or walls. Some sections may involve steps: ask about the route before bringing a wheelchair or pushchair. The rest of the visit can still be worthwhile for someone unable to enter, so do not let one section exhaust the whole group.

7️⃣ 🏘️ Zelve: village and everyday life in the rock

Zelve consists of three valleys and displays remains of homes, worship spaces and everyday life. The official page notes that people lived here until 1952. This changes how you view it: rather than seeking a single church façade, notice how rooms, passages and services were distributed through a rocky environment.

The Ministry mentions remains of a monastery, churches, tunnel, mill and mosque, but seeing or entering each feature depends on the open route. Follow signs and barriers rather than entering a cavity or tunnel simply because it appears in an old photograph. Some details can be viewed from outside, which is sufficient to understand the site without trying to climb to every level.

Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half for Zelve according to fitness and interest, including time to sit and drink. With children, ask how people stored food and reached their homes, turning the visit into an observation exercise. If hot or the ground is wet, choose a shorter section: the site's size does not oblige you to complete every valley.

8️⃣ 🍄 Paşabağ: formations and photography

Paşabağ is also known as Monks Valley and offers distinctive rock formations and some spaces associated with living and worship. View them from authorised paths and compare the different caps, pillars and visible materials. A simple question about why two rocks differ in shape can interest children without a lengthy lesson.

Allow roughly half an hour to an hour as a suggestion, then adjust for light and crowds. For a clear photograph, wait for a suitable moment rather than standing in the middle of a path or crossing a barrier. Do not rely on photographs taken from places unavailable to visitors or climb the rock to imitate an old image.

The official page places Zelve approximately one kilometre from Paşabağ and five kilometres from Avanos. These are approximate geographical relationships rather than a guarantee of a short, prepared walking route between entrances. Check the actual road and vehicle stopping point, particularly with children or a pushchair, or in hot weather.

9️⃣ 🚗 Arrival, tours and transfers between entrances

Göreme Museum's address is on Müze Caddesi in the town's Gaferli area; Zelve's is in Aktepe, Avanos. If driving, identify entrances and parking before departure rather than allowing your phone to lead you to a photography spot or side track inside a valley. Confirm parking charges and payment arrangements locally instead of inferring them from admission.

With a taxi or car and driver, agree the three entrances, waiting time, meeting points and total fare. Ask whether parking, tickets and lunch are included and what happens if you shorten a visit because a child is tired. A written time agreement is easier than leaving each stop to be calculated at the end.

On an organised tour, read the number of sightseeing stops, time at each site, included shops, language and ticket arrangements. A red tour name does not guarantee a uniform programme across companies. If planning local-bus travel, check current routes, times and return possibilities; this guide does not invent a fixed service between gates.

🔟 🗓️ A full day and lighter alternatives

Art and scenery plan: Begin at Göreme when it opens or shortly afterwards and allow around two hours, including the Dark Church decision. After a break, transfer to Paşabağ for a shorter visit, then have lunch. Make Zelve your afternoon activity if energy and time before its ticket-office closure remain, or leave it until the next day.

Walking and rock-cut life plan: Start at Zelve during the cooler part of the day, then visit Paşabağ and have lunch before Göreme. This puts the broad outdoor area first, but requires good timing so that you do not reach the churches at the end of the day. Set your lunch departure time before sitting down.

Short family plan: Choose only two sites, with one main activity and rest time. Göreme and Paşabağ suit a first visit; Zelve and Paşabağ suit those less interested in detailed church interpretation. Do not automatically add a long underground-city visit or paid sunset excursion: a small transfer on the map can become exhausting after hours of walking.

These durations and sequences are suggestions rather than a transport company's timetable. Add transfers, waiting, food and weather, and do not treat closing times as arrival targets. Keep the option to omit the last stop without a major loss.

1️⃣1️⃣ 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Season, children and access

In summer, bring water, a hat and suitable sun protection, and put extended walking in the morning. In cold or rain, choose secure footwear and layers and check ground conditions and open sections. Rocky paths and steps differ from an indoor museum floor, so rain is not an automatic reason to choose this day.

With an infant, shorten the visit and carry essentials in a way that makes steps manageable. A pushchair can help in some areas but may need carrying or leaving in others; ask management about your intended route rather than assuming suitability for every church and valley. Agree a meeting place if some adults enter a section unsuitable for everyone.

For wheelchair use or limited mobility, request specific descriptions of entrances, paths, toilets and areas viewable without steps. Passing through the gate does not establish access throughout the site. For children sensitive to confined or dimly lit spaces, explain the churches beforehand and allow the option to wait with a companion in a suitable area.

1️⃣2️⃣ 💶 Ticket budget and actual savings

Calculate basic Göreme admission, the Dark Church if needed, the Zelve–Paşabağlar product, then transport, food, parking or a guide. Do not double the Zelve and Paşabağ component before checking the ticket's coverage, or buy church admission again if your particular tourist pass covers it.

Purchase optionHow to compareWhat to remember
Individual ticketsAdd only the products you will actually useChurch admission can be separate
Cappadocia tourist passCompare €65 with visits made within three days of first admissionOne entry per site; night visits excluded
A tour including ticketsRequest names of the included products and sitesA church photograph in the advertisement does not prove inclusion

For example, if you will visit only two sites and then leave, compare their actual prices with the pass rather than adding places you will never enter to make the purchase appear cheaper. If underground cities and additional sites are in your programme, include them alongside the available time: a pass's value depends on actual use.

1️⃣3️⃣ ❓ Mistakes, questions and a visit checklist

Is the Dark Church excluded from every pass? No. Domestic Müzekart excludes it, whereas the official Cappadocia tourist pass list includes it; individual admission is a separate product.

Does the tourist pass include night visits? The official page excludes night programmes, so confirm their dedicated ticket.

Are Zelve and Paşabağ the same place? They are different visitor areas, with an official product bearing both names. Check how to use it at both entrances and arrange transport between them.

Can I enter every rock-cut cavity? Follow the paths, barriers and open sections; internet photographs do not constitute permission to enter.

Common mistakes include confusing cards, leaving the church until the last minute, buying duplicate tickets, assuming entrances are close on foot, and failing to plan lunch and the return journey.

  • Choose a main site and identify the churches or valleys that interest your family.
  • Check site and ticket-office hours and available sections before travel.
  • Match tickets, pass, identity, age and church coverage.
  • Identify entrances, transport, meeting points and waiting time.
  • Prepare water, footwear, clothing and offline tickets.
  • Follow photography instructions, avoid touching paintings and stay behind barriers.
  • Allow scope to shorten the final site and return comfortably.
