Gordion near Ankara: Museum, Phrygian Capital and the Great Tumulus
Explore Gordion near Polatlı through its museum and archaeological landscape. The ancient capital, its tumuli and the museum form distinct stops; check current visitor access before travelling.
Where is Gordion?
Gordion is at Yassıhöyük in the Polatlı district of Ankara Province, around 90 km southwest of central Ankara and 18 km northwest of Polatlı. The ancient settlement was a major centre of the Phrygian kingdom.
Set separate map points for Gordion Museum and the tumulus. If using public transport, confirm the connection from Polatlı to Yassıhöyük and your return before leaving; do not assume a direct service.
Museum and ancient settlement
The museum presents finds in chronological order, including objects from Gordion and the surrounding area. Ask what galleries are open and whether a particular object is displayed before making a special trip.
The archaeological property includes the citadel mound, lower town and fortifications. A mapped archaeological area is not necessarily accessible to visitors: follow signs and ask staff which parts can be visited.
The Great Tumulus and the Midas name
The large burial mound known as the Midas Tumulus (Tumulus MM) contains an exceptionally preserved wooden burial chamber. The familiar name does not prove that the historical King Midas was buried there.
The museum and tumulus are distinct stops. Ask staff about the route, current access to the mound and what visitors can see; do not assume that the burial chamber itself is open to enter.
A practical visit plan
| Stop | What to consider | Check before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Polatlı / Yassıhöyük | Plan the approach and return | Road, transport and parking |
| Gordion Museum | Allow time for the displays | Opening, tickets and facilities |
| Great Tumulus | Visit if access is permitted | Route and access conditions |
| Archaeological area | View only permitted sections | Current restrictions and walking conditions |
The order is flexible; leave out any stop that is closed and allow time for the return trip.
Tickets, comfort and protection
Check the official museum listing for current opening, prices and any Müzekart eligibility; do not assume the same fee or eligibility applies to every visitor. Confirm toilet, accessibility and pushchair conditions directly with staff.
Bring water, sun protection and shoes suitable for uneven ground. Stay on permitted routes, do not climb the mounds or handle artefacts, and follow any photography or drone restrictions.
Before setting off
Frequently asked questions
Is Gordion in central Ankara?
No. It is at Yassıhöyük near Polatlı, so allow for an intercity road journey.
Is the Great Tumulus certainly Midas’s grave?
No. It is traditionally called the Midas Tumulus, but the burial is not proven to belong to the historical king.
Can I enter the wooden burial chamber?
Do not assume this. Ask staff which parts of the tumulus are currently accessible.
Is the archaeological settlement always open?
Access to individual parts may be restricted; confirm with the museum and follow signs.
Can I combine the visit with Ankara’s Museum of Anatolian Civilisations?
Yes, as separate stops, but they are in different locations; allow for travel and check both opening times.
