Houston’s Turkish centre Alperen Şengün entered the new season established in the NBA, following a second consecutive All-Star selection.
As at 2 October 2026, the new regular season had yet to begin; the league’s opening night was scheduled for 20 October. Last season’s figures therefore provide a baseline for assessing his development once competitive games begin.

| Measure | Average per game |
|---|---|
| Points | 20.4 |
| Rebounds | 8.9 |
| Assists | 6.2 |
Şengün played 72 regular-season games. These figures offer a starting point for comparison, alongside the quality of his scoring opportunities and the efficiency of his performances in the coming season.
Şengün is an important scorer and playmaker at centre. His passing helps Houston involve teammates cutting towards the basket and exploit spaces left by the defence.
Fred VanVleet’s anticipated return offered additional help in organising the offence and creating easier opportunities. A key tactical question was whether that support would improve Şengün’s attacking efficiency and leave him more energy for defence and rebounding.
Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson are also central to Houston’s team. How responsibilities and possession are shared among them is an important part of following Şengün’s season.
His preparations for the season included work with shooting coach Chip Engelland on free throws and three-point shooting.
Last season, he shot 69.1% from the free-throw line and 30.5% from three-point range. He discussed improving his balance when shooting and making corner three-pointers a larger part of his game.
Progress in those areas could improve Houston’s spacing, especially when Şengün plays alongside another centre.
