Getting Around Türkiye’s Black Sea Region: Hire Car, Driver or Group Tour?
A practical comparison of flexibility, cost and comfort, with examples and a clear booking plan
A practical comparison of flexibility, cost and comfort, with examples and a clear booking plan
When planning a visit to Türkiye's Black Sea region, a hire car may seem best for its freedom, a tour cheaper because it is priced per person, or a driver more comfortable because someone else handles the road. The right choice depends on your group size, hotel location, luggage, destinations and how many days you actually need transport.
Start with a realistic two-day itinerary rather than a list of everywhere in the region. Write down where you are staying, the main destination, stops and return journey, then compare options for that same itinerary. Sometimes a combination works best: a private transfer on arrival, a tour on a particular day and local transport for a day in town. This is a planning comparison; the destination and official-source information was reviewed on 7 October 2026.
Write an itinerary you can compare
Give each day one starting point and one main destination, then add stops once you know where they are. Specify the number of passengers, children's ages, suitcases, pushchair and any accessibility requirements. These details determine vehicle size and timings more usefully than the word “family”.Distinguish a sightseeing trip from a move to another hotel. Visiting Uzungöl and returning to Trabzon requires waiting time and a return journey; moving your luggage to accommodation by the lake is a different task. A Trabzon–Rize transfer with a long stop is not automatically priced or organised like a day tour ending at the same hotel.
Distances help you understand the scale: the Culture Portal lists Uzungöl at around 99 kilometres from Trabzon, while Rize tourism information places Ayder around 87 kilometres from central Rize. Returning doubles the basic distance before extra stops or differences in hotel location. These figures are neither driving times nor two legs of a single route starting in Trabzon.
Comparing the main options
| Consideration | Hire car | Car with a driver | Shared tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Departure and return times | You choose, within the rental terms | Agreed before booking | Set by the group itinerary |
| Stops | Considerable flexibility, allowing for roads and parking | Flexible within the agreement and service duration | Fixed or optional, as advertised by the organiser |
| Responsibility for driving | Yours | The driver's | The operator's |
| Luggage and pushchair | Choose a suitable category and check boot space | Send quantities and dimensions in advance | Ask about the permitted space |
| Cost | Rental, running costs and agreed extras | A quote for the route, duration and inclusions | Usually per person, with possible exclusions |
| Changing the day | Practical if conditions and the contract allow | Requires agreement on price and time | Less flexible because the group plan is involved |
This compares how the options work, rather than judging providers. A private driver may offer a rigid itinerary, while a small tour may allow generous time. Read the actual offer you are buying. Flexibility need not mean visiting more places: you can use the freedom to stop to slow down and give the family a rest.
When does a hire car make sense?
A hire car is practical if you need daily travel between your accommodation and destinations, can manage driving, parking and fuel, and want to return according to how the family feels. Two qualified drivers permitted under the agreement can share the work, but formally add the second driver if required. Do not leave that arrangement until halfway through the trip.Choose for usable capacity: seats occupied, child seats and the luggage space remaining with everyone on board. A category name does not tell you the boot size, and “seven seats” does not mean room for seven large suitcases. Ask for a model or specifications and realistic space suited to your needs.
Check collection and return locations and opening hours, any one-way drop-off charge, fuel policy, usage restrictions and breakdown assistance. Ask about your intended route, especially if adding a highland destination or local road. A car suitable for the main road to the lake or Ayder is not necessarily suitable for every side road.
A car with a driver: book a clearly defined service
This can suit a private itinerary with flexible stops and no driving responsibility, or a group needing help with hotel access or transfer arrangements. Start with the route and duration, then request a quote covering the outbound and return journeys, waiting, collection and drop-off.Distinguish three offers: a one-way transfer, a car that waits during a visit, and a daily service for an agreed number of hours. All may be described as “car with driver”, despite substantial differences in price and flexibility. Having the vehicle with you does not automatically include extending the day or travelling to another province.
Ask who your contact is, when the driver's details will arrive, how extra time or stops are charged, and whether the same driver stays with you over several days. Make any language requirement, child seat or pushchair space explicit. Agree how a destination can be changed if the road or weather is unsuitable, rather than postponing that decision until you are far away.
Shared tours: look closely at the itinerary
A tour may suit a solo traveller, a couple or a family comfortable with a meeting point and a fixed programme. It lets you choose a particular day without managing a car for the whole stay. Suitability depends on meeting and pickup times, walking and activities, rather than the destination photograph alone.Ask how much time you actually spend at the destination and how many stops there are, with their purpose. Distinguish a rest stop from shopping or an optional activity. If you do not join an activity, where will you wait and for how long? Ask whether the tour requires a minimum number of passengers and what happens if it is not reached.
Check what the price includes: transport, meals, a guide, admission and activities, plus the conditions for children. If booking through a travel agency, look for its name in TÜRSAB's official member list and request confirmation naming the provider delivering the service. A name search helps verify identity; time on site and vehicle quality still need to be checked in the offer.
Compare total costs for the same group
For a hire car, add rental, fuel, parking and the extras your itinerary needs. For a driver, add the agreed price and excluded items such as overtime or specific charges. For a tour, multiply the fare by the number of paying passengers, then add any extras you choose. Compare all quotes for the same date, route and group size.| Hypothetical example only | Total transport cost | Per person, two people | Per person, four people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car: 1,800 rental + 500 running costs + 100 parking | 2,400 units | 1,200 | 600 |
| Driver: quote including the agreed transport | 3,600 units | 1,800 | 900 |
| Tour: 800 per person | 1,600 for two or 3,200 for four | 800 | 800 |
The example shows why group size changes the comparison, but does not automatically make a car the best choice for four people. The driver's time, your driving effort, flexibility and space all have value. A security deposit held on a bank card is also different from the final cost. Read the conditions, release timing and effect on your available funds. Do not record it as a definite expense or assume a guaranteed refund on a fixed date.
Four scenarios to help you decide
A solo traveller visiting one destination: compare a tour with buses available in both directions, then consider private transport if flexibility matters. A whole car may cost more than the benefit it brings for one day, especially if you remain in town for the rest of your stay.A family staying several days: list the longer outings, city days and rest days. If driving suits you, compare rental covering only the days you need it. If you would rather not drive, request a driver quote for each day's route. Every day need not be equally long or priced the same.
A group with an older traveller or a pushchair: prioritise easy collection, stops and drop-off, and request sufficient space. A tour may work if its itinerary and format suit the group, but ask about walking and waiting places before paying.
Moving between hotels with luggage: compare a private transfer or rental with a suitable return location, separating an optional visit from the essential move. A shared sightseeing tour is not a guaranteed way to take your cases to another hotel.
You need not use one option every day
You might book a direct airport transfer, spend a day walking and using local transport in town, take a tour to Uzungöl, then hire a car or driver for a day with particular timings. This reduces unused rental or service days and ties each choice to a real itinerary.Trabzon Airport's operator lists shuttle services, municipal buses, dolmuş, taxis, car hire and private cars. It notes that some buses and dolmuş run along the adjoining coastal road. Identify the boarding point rather than assuming every service stops outside the terminal door. A straightforward arrival transfer may be all you need on a day without a longer outing.
If collecting a hire car later, allow for reaching the rental office. If booking two tours, check both meeting points, dates and operating arrangements. If hiring a driver for several days, list each day's route in the confirmation, including the rest day and how changes are handled.
Group destinations geographically
Plan a Uzungöl day along its route from Trabzon and an Ayder day along the coast and valley in Rize. Do not combine distant destinations simply because both are in “the Black Sea region”. Passing somewhere on the road does not eliminate the time needed to park, walk and eat.Ask the provider to place the stops on one map, then explain your priority: a long visit to one destination or several brief stops? Reduce backtracking and use a hotel-change day for a suitable route if it actually helps. An attractive place in the opposite direction may deserve a separate day.
For an additional highland destination, give its name and road entrance, and ask about the final stretch, descent and return timing. A broad area name is not a precise location for the view you want; the area may contain different roads and sites. A route manageable by one group in a larger vehicle may not suit a small car or other travellers' abilities.
Comfort and capacity matter more than a vehicle category
Send passenger numbers, luggage and details of a pushchair or wheelchair before choosing the car. Ask for confirmation of suitable child seats where needed and the luggage space left after fitting them. If you need accessible travel, check boarding the vehicle, the destination entrance and facilities. A suitable vehicle alone does not make the whole visit accessible.Include road breaks in the agreement and choose a meal stop allowing enough time without pressure to return. For an older traveller, arrange a nearby drop-off and walking that can be adjusted. With children, do not pack the day simply because you have a private car. Flexibility is useful when you use it to rest.
Before booking a lengthy service, test one day's plan on paper: driving, break, arrival, walking, food and return. If they do not fit, reduce the destinations before asking for a faster or larger vehicle.
Factoring in roads and weather
Check Turkish meteorological forecasts for the city and inland area, then road information from KGM. Route analysis helps compare road options, while roadworks bulletins flag current works and traffic arrangements. Neither gives a complete account of every hotel access road or local highland road. With a hire car, have an alternative you know how to reach if the original route is unsuitable. With a driver, agree who decides on changes and how they affect the price. With a tour, ask how the operator changes the itinerary and whether the terms offer an alternative, rebooking or another arrangement. Providers do not all follow one rule.
A local driver does not guarantee every road will remain open. In poor visibility or changing conditions, experience is valuable for choosing a suitable programme. A shorter day may suit the family better than trying to tick off numerous places.
A quotation request you can send
“We need transport on … from hotel … to … and back to the same hotel. There will be … adults and … children, with … bags and a … pushchair. We would like to stop at … and spend … at the destination. Please confirm the vehicle and capacity, service and waiting duration, inclusions and exclusions, charges for extra time or route changes, amendment and cancellation terms, and payment method.”This gives companies the same basis for a quote. Request a written reply. Do not compare hotel-door collection with a meeting-point offer without allowing for reaching that point. Save the provider's name, contact details, confirmation and proof of payment on your phone.
Before the first day, reconfirm the address, time, passenger count and meeting place. Tell the provider if you change hotels or add a bag or child: small details can change the vehicle or collection time.
Check the offer before accepting it
- Are the destination and accommodation clearly stated, and is the return included?
- Is the price per vehicle or per person, and are child categories specified?
- Are service duration, time at the destination and stops clear?
- Are fuel, parking, fees and activities listed as included or excluded?
- Is capacity sufficient for the passengers, luggage and requirements you supplied?
- Are delay, amendment and cancellation terms clear?
- Do you know who confirms the booking and the contact number for the service day?
If the answers differ, correct the comparison before choosing the lowest figure. A slightly higher quote may include items charged separately elsewhere; a cheaper, more limited offer may suit you perfectly if it covers exactly what you need. Decide from the details of your trip.
Final questions before deciding
Do I need a car for the whole Black Sea trip?Count the days you will actually use it. A city visit and one outing do not require full-stay rental, while frequent moves between hotels may make a car practical.
Does a driver also act as a guide?
Ask about the advertised service and language of communication. A driver does not automatically provide guided commentary or activity bookings.
Is a tour cheaper for a family?
Multiply each fare category by the number of people, add exclusions and travel to the meeting point, then compare a private quote for the same route.
Should I choose a four-wheel-drive vehicle straight away?
Identify the route first, then choose a suitable vehicle based on the company's confirmation and road conditions. The category name does not guarantee suitability for every road, and your itinerary may not require it.
Which choice is most comfortable?
One that makes clear who drives, where you arrive, how long you stay, how you return and what you actually pay, while matching your family's abilities and desired flexibility.
