🚇 Bursa transport: making the connections work

Bursa's transport network serves a dense historic centre, expanding residential districts, industrial areas, a university, the City Hospital, the Mudanya and Gemlik coast and outlying settlements across 17 districts. Its effectiveness depends on practical connections between walking, buses, rail and ferries, with clear information and reasonable waiting times.

In 2026, existing operations sit alongside fleet improvements, local roads and major rail projects. Some services already run; other links have target opening dates. Passengers need to distinguish the two.

🚌 The scale of the existing network

BURULAŞ's 2026 roadmap reported approximately 315 million public-transport journeys in 2025: around 210 million by bus and 105 million by rail. The combined bus operation served 402 routes, with a stated daily average of about 595,000 journeys. BUDO carried more than 710,000 passengers that year.

The operator's current dashboard is now labelled September 2026, recording 15,915,889 bus passengers, 8,017,440 rail passengers and 54,749 BUDO passengers. These are one month's figures, not an annual total.

Buses carry a large share of trips. Rail improvements therefore increase the importance of dependable feeder buses and coordinated transfers.

🚇 BursaRay and the tram network

BursaRay provides the main high-capacity rail corridors across the city, serving employment, shopping, education and residential areas. BURULAŞ describes its combined rail network as exceeding 55 km; this should not be read as the length of BursaRay alone.

Frequency, vehicle capacity, transfers, accessible stations and information during disruption matter as much as route length. The separate BurTram lines have these published characteristics:
• T1: 6 km and 16 stops, serving the central loop.
• T2: 8.3 km and 11 stops, connecting the Kent Meydanı corridor with the intercity bus terminal.
• T3: 2.2 km and 9 stops, a shorter local tram route.

BursaRay, trams and buses have complementary roles rather than interchangeable routes.

🏥 The City Hospital extension: completed section and remaining project

The Emek–High-Speed Rail Station–City Hospital extension is a major rail project. The ministry's detailed description gives approximately 6 km, four stations and a 110,000 m² maintenance and stabling depot. It states that Geçit–Balat station opened and was transferred to the municipality in 2024, with the remaining section targeted for 2026.

The published 88 km/h design speed and 410,000 passengers per day are project specifications and a capacity figure, not existing ridership. A target date is not confirmation of opening: check current operating announcements and route information before planning a hospital journey.

The intended benefits are access for patients and workers, integration of the high-speed railway station with the city, and higher-capacity service for the growing Emek–Balat–Geçit corridor.

🚄 High-speed rail also needs good urban connections

The Ministry of Transport targeted the Bursa–Osmaneli section of the Bandırma–Bursa–Yenişehir–Osmaneli project for the second half of 2026, connecting Bursa with the Ankara–Istanbul high-speed network. Project updates describe construction progress and targets; they should not be interpreted as confirmation that tickets are on sale.

The station will need useful onward journeys to Osmangazi, Nilüfer, Yıldırım, the university and hospital, including the first and last services of the day. That makes the urban extension and feeder routes integral to the wider railway's usefulness.

🛣️ New roads and local connections

An August 2026 municipal update described work on Atatürk Bulvarı in Görükle, a planned 800-metre road 30 metres wide, intended to connect with Gelibolu Caddesi and provide an alternative towards İrfaniye. It also reported more than 25 km of hot-mix asphalt, over 113 km of surface dressing and 4.3 km of new planned roads delivered across the province during July.

Local road work improves access, but congestion can persist if vehicles converge on the same bottlenecks. Pavements, safe crossings, regular buses, parking management and connections with rail should accompany new capacity.

💳 Cards, payment and clear information

The 2026 roadmap reported consolidation of 47 card types into four main categories, alongside BursaKart and its mobile application. The official fare page says bank-card payment is accepted on BursaRay and buses at the full fare, with an additional service charge. Check the current tariff rather than assuming it costs the same as a BursaKart journey.

Useful integration also needs real-time bus information, a clear combined walking-and-transit route, understandable transfer discounts and BursaRay refund rules, consistent disruption notices and accessible movement from pavement to vehicle.

⛴️ The sea is part of Bursa's transport network

BUDO connects Mudanya with Istanbul. The land journey to the pier and onward travel at the other end both affect the whole trip. Check BURULAŞ route information and the ferry operator's current timetable, allowing for seasonal changes, traffic and weather cancellations.

A ferry is an intercity gateway with connections on either side. Mudanya residents and visiting passengers benefit when local transport makes those connections dependable.

📍 Choosing a mode for your journey

• Across the city: start with BursaRay if stations are convenient at both ends.
• Historic centre: combine tram and walking where practical.
• Intercity bus terminal: consider T2 or a connecting bus from your location.
• Mudanya and BUDO: allow a road-connection margin and check sea conditions.
• City Hospital: verify the extension's actual operating status that day.
• Outlying districts: check regional buses and the return timetable before setting out, especially in the evening.

🔭 What will define success?

Passengers should see more predictable journey times, easier transfers, regular services in outer neighbourhoods and safe walking access to stops. When new rail links open, the test will be how well they work as one network.

✅ Plan with operating services

BursaRay, trams, buses and BUDO remain the basis of getting around Bursa. Major rail projects, local road improvements and clearer payment arrangements can strengthen that network. Build a journey around confirmed operating services, checking official announcements before relying on a planned extension.
